Do you think the old monk is right?

'What are the differences between Heaven and h**l?', a young monk asked an aged monk who was renowned for his wisdom.

'There are no material differences,' replied the old monk.

'None at all?' asked the puzzled young monk.

'That's right. Both Heaven and h**l have a spacious hall with a big pot in the center in which noodles are boiled, giving off a delicious scent,' said the old priest. 'The size of the huge pan, the number of people sitting around the pot and the bowl of sauce placed in front of each diner are the same in both places.'

'The odd thing is that each diner is given a pair of meter-long chopsticks and must use them to eat the noodles.'

'To eat the noodles, you must hold the chopsticks properly at their ends,' the old monk told the young Zen monk.

'In the case of h**l's kitchen, people are always hungry because no matter how hard they try, they can't get the noodles into their mouths,' said the old priest.

'But isn't it the same case for the people in Heaven?' the junior monk inquited.

'No. They can eat because they each feed the person sitting opposite them at the table. That's the difference between Heaven and h**l,' explained the old monk.

  6. Any time we act out of self-interest, we fall immediately into h**l.

Any time we act out of interest for the well-being of others, then all beings enter heaven.

The difficult thing, for me, is that heaven and h**l are binary.

It seems that we can't be just a little bit in h**l. Or mostly in heaven. (It's like being just a little pregnant.)

If we reserve even one iota of self-interest in any action, we create instant suffering. Why would we do that?

  7. Gotta agree with MeShe . Just sounds like state organised religious torture to me.

You any relation to Half Drawn Boy (wink wink nudge nudge).

  12. I think he explained it perfectly . . . greedy people who think only of themselves are punished.  People willing to help someone else are rewarded in Heaven

  13. I like that.  Thanks for sharing!  Makes you think!

  14. Sounds like typical religious logic to use food as a way to control the outcome of a persons future & fate after they die as well as while they are still living.  Sheesh!  I don't think he's right or wrong...just brainwashed & misguided by his surroundings & upbringing.
