  1. id say they overall lost

  2. Going player-by-player as of July 8th:

    Lost:

Sean Avery - bad loss.  We'll miss him

Jaromir Jagr - he still has plenty left, but at least he didn't go somewhere in the Eastern conference.  Still, would have rather had him back

Fedor Tyutin - a solid 2nd line defensemen, but I never saw him being more than that.  The Rangers have enough 2nd line defenders.

Christian Backman - steady guy, but replaceable

Martin Straka - I think he's seen his better days.

    Marek Malik - replaceable

Brendan Shanahan - if the team is looking to get younger and faster, I understand letting him go.

    Gained

Wade Redden - a risk, but he has been an All-Star caliber defensemen in the very recent past.  He was overpaid, but I think he'll do very well for a few years

Markus Naslund - at this point, he's a slightly younger, better player than Shanahan, and he may perform even better than that paired on the Gomez line.

Dmitir Kalinin - certainly good enough to replace Backman, and may even end up as good as Tyutin.

Aaron Voros - A big guy who likes to fight, and spends most of his time in the box.  Only makes the team if they decide they need a goon to protect the stars.

Patrick Rissmiller - they're just hoping they get lucky here, since they need wingers.  He's big, but doesn't seem to use his size much (only 30 PIMs last year).

Dan Fritsche - I really like his potential.  He's already a pretty good defensive center, and has shown flashes offensively.  He's young, but there's hope here.

Nikolai Zherdev - to me, the whole off-season depends on this guy.  He's got Alexis Kovalev-type skills, but never put it together in Columbus.  If he's the Kovalev currently playing for the Canadiens, it's a great move.  If he's the Kovalev towards the end of his Ranger days, well.....

All in all, I like what the Rangers did.  They weren't going to beat the Penquins or Canadians with the team they had, so they needed youth, speed and size.  Of course, most of these guys come with major question marks.  But I think it was worth the risk.

The moves have been very risky, but if they pay off, the upside is great.

  3. they got overrated D-Men and lost some big offensive forces including one of the best ever in Jagr. they got worse.

  4. I'm going to give them a C-. They lost key players that have won cups and know how to play good playoff hockey. But they did get Redden, Naslund, and Zherdev. Thats okay.

  5. they lost avery, shanahan, jagr and gained naslund and redden

    doesnt sound great to me
