They already were (but Yao went down). They could win against any team last year, but the d**n Jazz. They could never solve the Okur riddle. Houston centers doesn't want to guard Okur beyond the paint, but Okur is the best three point shooting big man. Lakers had the luxury to put Odom (faster and longer) on him and Gasol on Boozer to solve the problem.

However, this trade really enabled them to past the Jazz, because they can switch to a smaller line up when they want to (in Scola, Battier, Artest, McGrady, and Alston).

They were contenders last year. 22 game winning streak winning 10 without Yao. Forced a game 6 with the Jazz without Yao. Plus those refs KNEW Andre Kirlinko flopped when Bobby Jackson hit that 3. Those refs hated Houstonians.

the one thing that I am certain of is there is NO ego big enough on that team that could have set off the ATOMIC BOMB of rage that is Ronnie, like Kowannabe could have on the Lakers...

On Paper the Rockets look good!  They have Yao and Tracy who are both all-stars. And then you throw in Scola, Artest (who is an all-star when his head is in the game) and Alston and you have a great starting 5.  And then you add Battier and Landry off the bench and you have a tough, tough squad.  

The Rockets were already near the upper eschelon in the West and this moves definitely puts them in the top 4.  They may be the toughest defensive team in the West.  But there are intangibles- staying healthy and team chemistry- but dang they got that much tougher- without giving up very much.

they've always been a contender, before the bench just couldn't come through when they needed them. now u got artest, which will give u at least 25 to 30 points a night.
