I think the spectre of national suicide will prevent ww3.... but that's just my opinion..

No, I don't think so. It's possible, but I don't think it would escalate that far.

There won't be another WW3 but rather, a new Cold War - Russia vs. NATO.

Good question I wonder myself. Russia protected its own interest they probably took it a bit too far. I believe they finally withdrew their troops back to their zone. If the United States makes some type of strike. Things may get ugly quickly look up TSAR BOMB. Russia conventional forces aren't up to par and they like any other country will have to defend itself.
