  1. For sure there are people out there who are better but doesn't have a coach or any opportunity to be seen and discovered. Money is also a big issue. If you live in the middle of nowhere but you are good in one sport, who is gonna know? Too bad eh? If I know some like those, I would be rooting for them.

  2. theyres probally many people out there that have the POTENTIAL to be better, but no one gives them the proper training to be better, or possibly they havent been noticed

  3. I don't think there are better athletes out there.  If you took that athlete and put him/her in the olympics, the person would probably not medal in the event.  There are athletes though that could participate.

  4. With out a doubt!

There are a lot of weekend warriors out there who due to commitments and circumstances will never get a chance to try out for the Olympics, but excel at local events where they can participate.

  5. lmfao !! no doubt, futebol (soccer) teams only brought 1 star player into their country, people like theirry henry, dida, eto, ronaldo, adriano, Cristiano ronaldo, beckham, rooney, etc. are not wasting their time in beijing. sorry to say, but the OLYMPICS is Not even close to the main event in this futebol world...

  6. Absolutely. There are several top soccer and basketball players who are not competing. Injuries could knock out a few people - also the fact that the olympics are every four years means that some athletes might peak in between the olympics, etc. It's all a matter of having perfect circumstances to participate, such as money, time and health. I feel that it is very incorrect to assume the athletes who show up are the best athletes at their sport.

  7. Doubtfully, Although they maybe some out there the best of the bunch are giving it their all at the Olympics.

  8. Yes, Angelo is right.  Soccer only allowed 4 teams from UEFA while the same amount from Asia (joke) are there....and all knocked out now.  Kaka (Brazil) isn't there, Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) isn't there, Benzema and Henry (France) aren't there, Fernando Torres (Spain) isn't there.

  9. Ya many great teams and players may have had a bad run in qualifying for their country so they didn't get to go. 2 prime examples are Veronica Campbell-Brown and Tyson g*y who did not get to qualify for their 100m and 200m respectively, which are their favored events. But their are also like football(soccer) teams and volleyball teams that may comprise of some of the best athletes in the world who just failed to get their team to qualify. And their is the possibility of talent undiscovered or hidden from the country.

Also there are many athletes, despite the Chinese controversy, who are under-aged and are just not eligible for the Olympics.

  10. Yes there are various organization out there athletes belong to that the Olympics can't accept.

  11. no

these athletes spend all their time training for specific events.  Unless you train for an event 8-10 hours a day like Olympic athletes, then you aren't better than an olympic athlete.

  12. Unquestionably. Not all athletes can afford to take years out of their lives to train for the Olympics - nor do they have the financial backing to do so. What you are seeing at the Olympic is almost exclusively 'professional' athletes. They are supposed to be simon pure amateurs, but we all know they are supported and subsidized by their governments (except for some of the smaller countries) and they are often 'spokesmen' for major corporations, at huge annual salaries.

Some of the Olympic records have been broken in other amateur venues, but they don't count for the record books because they don't have all the sophisticated measuring systems etc. - just some volunteer with a stopwatch or whatever they need to measure that particular event.

If some of these amateur athletes had the chance to get the training and the coaching that the Olympic athletes have enjoyed, they could well have waltzed home with a fistful of medals too.
