Absolutely.  Some of the pioneering drivers of NASCAR kept a jug of moonshine in the front seat to drink from during caution laps.  I believe Curtis Turner was one of those. He'd also show up at the track seriously hung over, get a couple hours of sleep, and then get behind the wheel.

when the effects of alcohol wear off it would have such adverse effects on the driver he would only be making it incredibly difficult to race. The only drivers who drink during motorsports competition will never become successful. Mixing alcohol and motorsports is like trying to mix oil and water. It just don't work.

Sure. Ever heard of Tim Richmond? I've heard from someone on the "inside" that a VERY prominent driver had an intervention of sorts to try to get him to see the light. They're no different than anyone else.

Well, if a hangover counts then, h**l ya.  I know of mannnnny that get in the car half drunk or at the least, very hungover.  You may not believe me but its true, how many good ol boys have u seen take a turn from alcohol? Hehe.

Since booze of any kind isn't allowed in the pits or garage area (EXCEPT for the complimentary champagne or whatever after a win) if anyone did drink and drive they had to have snuck it under under their firesuits and I hardly think they did that.  I don't think any of them drink and drive on the track.  Just stop and think about it.  Putting their lives and their friends lives at risk, destroying their career etc.  No, I doubt if anyone has done that.

long ago when the ol' moonshiners used to run in races - sure. but i highly doubt it in the past decade or two.  of course, there will always be exceptions.

i'm not sure if it was called nascar yet, but there was a driver one time that ran a night race once and was so drunk that he had to ask a crew chief how he did the night before. funny thing is he won.
