Question:

Do you think there is a "regular" Yahoo GWS community?

I may not be a regular but I have been posting here since last year...

It was funny sometime... and sometimes informative...

What do you think of the regulars we have here? Do they really contribute more than the others?

  1. Sure there is. Every section has its regulars. I started out in Religion and Spirituality but the hostility was even more pronounced than it is here.

Here we just contend with a handful of hateful trolls. I've come to respect exactly 1 individual with whom I disagree... but he makes great points. So... eh, c'est la vie.

  2. LOL!  Y'all Like Bikes has just blown the lid on this whole sorry section: "the key contributors have no authority, no credentials, nothing to support their stance other than an abrasive and angry attitude".

Here is how the top contributor in G&WS answered my question re What reason(s) does a woman have to be a feminist in the West today?

Top contributor: "Trying to explain why I'm a feminist is like trying to explain why I have small hands. It's just a fact".

My response: "i.e. there is no rational reason?"

Her reply: "Maybe it's the way I was brought up, I don't know. Either way, it's there, and it's not going away".

This is surely about the weakest justification for feminism you can imagine, and from the top contributor in Gender and Women's Studies! Go figure..

  3. "where everybody knows your name..."

sure, there are in fact several "regular" communities functioning within this forum.  the question of value that you pose is really one of subjectivity.  who do you love?

  4. It's unfortunate that there are "regulars" but, indeed, it seems peculiar to this forum.  I initially entered with genuine questions and expertise I thought some might benefit from only to see derision and juvenile behaviour, rather than substantive rigour exercised in answering questions that can be addressed even with "soft science."  Instead it's merely an extension of Polls & Surveys where the key contributors have no authority, no credentials, nothing to support their stance other than an abrasive and angry attitude.

  5. Yes, and I consider you part of it, even though you're not quite as active as most of us.

  6. There are cliques here, but it isn't as bad the clique situation in the Pets-> Dogs section. The reporting there, as I understand it, is the worst in all of Y!A. It isn't GWS. In fact, the Suggestions Forum makes me guess Jokes and Riddles and Polls and Surveys as tied for second place. Religion and Spirituality can get nasty. The conclusion of all my rambling is that while GWS isn't the best part of Y!A, it certainly ain't the worst.

There are groups who stick by each other, though they don't (have to) always make sense when they argue.

I'd like to think I'm a regular, though I don't log in that often these days.

  7. Yes.  Things are a little upset right now because we have an influx of children out of school, who, excluding Mudkip, just add silliness and triviality to the board.  Some of the regulars are consequently bored, and taking vacations, but we'll be back.

  8. Longcat finds himself posting in GWS more and more. Does anyone have any cat food lol :P

  9. There definitely are regulars... not just regular contributers (Rio, obviously, and Tracey, The Mrs., La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Colonel Reb [even though I disagree with him a lot, he seems genuine], etc) but also regular trolls like Priscilla, kick-me-in-the-balls, Trollshark, Anatol, dsds, etc.

I enjoy the sense of community that regular members provide, and even the trolls provide laughter, at least.

Regular members are in some ways better at answering questions, because they've had to think out the answers again and again, but new members bring new perspectives, which is always nice.

I don't think there's a problem with having regulars; it's part of the reason I keep coming back.

  10. "... more intelligent with their insults". That's a good one, Jitterbug!! LOL!!

My dad Celtish was a regular here until he retired last week.

EDIT: I'm not sure dad has retired. He keeps popping his head up.

  11. This section definitely has a clique or in crowd. More so than others. Some of them are okay and others are not. No better and no worse than other sections. 1 thing I can say about this section is they stick together, and they are more intelligent with their insults.
