Do you think there will be a Triple Crown winner this year?

Actually I am starting to get my hopes up for Curlin and Hard Spun. I think that them 2 have what it takes... think I'm crazy but I bet that we will have a Triple Crown winner this year.

We would've had one last year, but poor Barbaro broke down. I know he had what it takes. :( R.I.P.

Anyways, you think there'll be a Triple Crown winner?

Why or Why not? If so... who are YOU thinkin?

  1. I'm not a big horse racing person, but I just don't believe there will be another triple crown winner in the next 10 years

  2. i think there will be as it is about time we have another one,,not sure who it will be,,

  3. I think this years crop is too deep for a triple crown winner (however I do think there is a horse talented enough in the crop to win it), unlike other years recently where mediocre horses came close a la War Emblem, Funny Cide and Smarty Jones.  In my mind the best shot was 2 years ago with Afleet Alex, a little racing luck (or a better ride by Jeremy Rose) in the Derby and he would have done it.  We will see another one eventually and you never know this could be the year it happens, trainers are trying to preserve their horses more these days leading up to the Derby so now they may only be on their 6th race of the year by the Belmont, where in the past they were going into the Derby off 5 or 6 preps.  I do think if any one of Circular Quay, Street Sense or Nobiz can move forward alot in their next race they could be a threat to win it, in my mind they are the only 3 year olds with the talent to be able to win 3 in a row at the distances asked, the only thing that may stop them is running against each other. Circular Quay and Street Sense have both shown distance and the track should be no problem, they have also run fast enough to win the triple crown, Nobiz has more than enough talent and has run almost fast enough to be a factor, but he did so while running green as h**l, any improvement makes him fast enough, if the blinkers help he could turn out to be a monster in the Wood and Triple Crown.  The rest in my mind have too many weakness' to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Triple Crown.

  4. I really don't think so. Based on the horses entered in each of the TC races, the pace scenario is usually widely different for each. It is very tough for a horse to come along that can handle the differing scenarios in each of the three races.

  5. I dont think there will ever be another. If you look, Secretariat and other Triple Crown winners were all HUGE horses. Nowadays all you see are skinny 15 hand horses that can't stand a scratch. Our breeding system has gone down the drain. Have you also noticed how no records have been broken? All because of bad breeding.

  6. I personally don't think we will ever have another triple crown winner and i think barbaro proves why.  We are making the surfaces hard and faster at the same time we are breeding weaker horses.  Horses like charsmatic used to have to be destoryed now we fix them and send them to stud where they can pass on weaker legs to future generations of horses.  Barbaro shows how far we've come to being able to put horses back together.  Yes the horses of today have the heart but we are training and rasing them weaker for harder tracks.  I think we'll continue to see just what we have seen, many who come so close only to breakdown or falter at the finish.

  7. No way.  A horse not in the Derby will win the Belmont Stakes.

  8. Nope, no triple crown winner this year.  I think the horses from years ago were bred better, so they ran better than the ones of today.  All of this artificial insemination stuff for better genes isn't worth the money they pay for it.

  9. There are some nice horses out there but i dont think therl be a triple crown winner for a while

    R.I.P

    Barbaro

  10. i don't know! yeah, secretariat was awesome!! i think barbaro had a chance!!! but you never know about the Derby this year!!!keep your fingers crossed!!!

  11. U no i dont think we will have one for quite a while because of the way we breed theses horses. For speed, for looks and they are bred so finely. But this is a nice crop and i like street sense and curlin they have guts and talent but the preakness is looking to be a strong feild with Hard spun possible skipping the derby to race there! Street Magician is opting to go there as well. and i would not be suprised to see a strong three year old upset the derby winner in the preakness and or belmont. But Street sense may be able to pull it of and if Nobiz matures he will be no suprise to overpower the feilds. Keep your eye on Scat Daddy and Great Hunter. They have great records and have had a very impressive season so far.

Here are my winners up through the Triple Crown.

    Wood memorial

Nobiz Like Shobiz should romp if concentrated

    Santa Anita

King of the Roxy (watch in the Preakness)

    Arkansas Derby

    Curlin(Watch his workouts pretty quick)

    Bluegrass Stakes

Street Sense or Any Given Saturday (Look best in derby)

    Kentucky Derby

Street Sense or Curlin (their running styles are good)

Stormello (Gonna make the winner earn it)

    Preakness

Hard Spun and Street Sense will meet for sure(Watch for a stretch dual)

    Belmont

Circular Quay( He closes like a freight train and hes gonna fight for it)

If street sense, nobiz,Hard spun, curlin, cobalt blue run their races look for a diff. winner each time.

  12. This is a nice crop of three year olds and there really isn't an absolute standout, yet. So much can happen in the next month and the PP draw will be very important for the Derby, as it is every year; Brother Derek was all but eliminated in 2006 with his post to the far outside.

I feel the speed won't hold and a racer that can stalk and kick - Scat Daddy, Circular Quay - may be there in the end to pick up the pieces.

With so many nice runners, it may be hard for a racer to emerge as being so special to capture the Triple Crown, though.

  13. Too early to tell. I like California breds and of course Kentucky breds. So for me right now it's Cobalt blue.

But there are a lot of preps to go yet.

I was on business last week in Louisville and had the pleasure of seeing Churchill downs. Gave to the Barbaro fund, that is his legacy , funding for horse laminitis.

  14. well Melissa I have always liked betting closers because 1. they give you more value betting, and 2. they give more value betting...lol, ok but honestly...they are harder to spot in handicapping a race than a pure speed horse or a stalker...I dont think there will be a triple crown winner, but I do think the derby winner will be at least 5 lengths off the pace at the 3/4 call...scat daddy and notional with their running styles are the kind of horses I generally play, along with the best speed horse and the two best stalkers(with hidden form) in my trifectas and superfectas...
