  1. the already have their own, well kinda, they have the Kentucky Oaks, and the Black eyed Susan, and the race the day before the Belmont Stakes.  those races are for the Fillies.  But I think its also fine for the fillies to run the triple crown races as long as they are strong enough.

  2. Yep. Fillies have just as much a chance of winning as anyone else. I actually enjoy when a filly races because she shows all the guys she can kick butt too. Especially Eight Belles. That filly did wonders.

  3. Absolutely.  Fillies race colts everyday and do wonderfully.  There's nothing about fillies that makes them worse than colts.  Fillies don't go into the gate against fillies thinking "oh i don't have to try so hard since I'm only racing fillies."  And anyone who has been around horses know that fillies are often stronger willed than the geldings or stallions.  Of the mares I've ridden, a lot of them try a lot harder than the geldings.  And if you've ever been in the field and watched the mares, they're really bossy... they rule the paddock.

Not every filly belongs against the colts.  I think Larry Jones and his connections made the absolute right decision when they put Proud Spell against the fillies and Eight Belles against the colts.  Eight Belles was big enough to hold her own against the colts.  Proud Spell is a much smaller horse.  That's the main difference between colts and fillies... the size.  It would have been harder for Proud Spell to come second to Big Brown than it was for Eight Belles.

There should not be a complete ban against fillies in the Triple Crown races.

  4. Yes. If they're strong enough, go for it.

  5. Yes, there is no evidence that fillies break down more often when running against colts.  The filly Rags To Riches won the Belmont last year - and she beat 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin to do it.  Fillies run against colts all the time in other countries.
