  1. Its accurate, but, let's go further.

    To use my hillybilly upbrangin

"if'n gots swats at school, more'n likely, I deserved it. I mean, GOLLY MOSES."

If PARENTS took control and disciplined their kids, would we even be talking about this. This is an extremely small percentage. "Spare the Rod, Spoil the child". I don't think any of us turned out too bad.

As for the "turn on". I don't think I'm going to get turned on my someone whackin my behind because I did something wrong. The writer needs to wake up. The only person who will be getting the thrill is the spanker, not the spankee in this case.

  2. I think this is a poor article (it looks like more of an editorial than an article), but it supports what has been found by hundreds of studies - that corporal punishment fails to change long-term behavior and is wrong.

  3. The article is limited on its use of primary evidence and citations.  It largely expresses the opinions of the authors.  Basically, it is little more than an opinion piece.  Someone could right an opinion piece arguing the opposite, without any research data to support it either.

My own opinion is that paddling has often been used as a default punishment, and when used in such a manner is inappropriate.  Encouraging positive behaviors and extinguishing negative behaviors involves dispassionate, thoughtful, and consistent application by the attending adult.  It requires a clear understanding of what the target behavior is and the function of the undesirable behavior.

Whenever possible, positive behavior motivation is preferable to negative consequences or punishments.  Also, extrinsic motivators should be faded to allow for self-discipline, self-management (active choice making) and intrinsic motivation.

  4. it is accurate in portraying their viewpoint but very little info in terms of actual statistics hurts their argument...i personally know several kids in our school who would benefit from a good paddling...

  5. As accurate as the information it provides.
