CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 40s, 50s, 60, 70s and 80s.

We survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always exciting and great fun.

We drank water from the garden hose or tap and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank cordial with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, No video games at all, No 99 channels, No Pay TV, No cable, No DVD movies or surround sound..

It's crazy! We even had No mobile phones, No text messaging, No personal computers, No Internet or Internet chat rooms..........

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we didn't poke out anyone's eye.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

  1. Lol yeah I've had that one before. Very funny and very true!

  2. Thanks for sharing!!  very interesting and so true!  I would not like to be a kid in our society these days, sad huh?

  3. I did all of this and more besides.

My kids played all over the place, Digging up worms in the garden and collecting them. Along with frogs, ladybirds, caterpillars.

Over the fields playing war games.  Rope swings over the stream, even taking picnics to eat as they played.

My eldest son  --  when he was about seven years old came home with, wait for it.............    A dead cat over his arm saying, "Look mum, look what I've found'!!!!!!!       He lived.

A bit of dirt is better than a white pillow!!!

  4. It is a good point, our childhood was so much more fun than the kids of today but we made it that way.

Long bike rides in the country was a favourite of mine.

  5. Brilliant!  A good point well made and Thank you for that because I enjoyed it tremendously with fondness.

  6. Oh so true my friend I well remember when GRASS was something that was mowed every Sunday. POT was a cooking vessel. COKE was just a nice soft drink.WEED was a trouble some plant that grew between the vegetables. Fings aint wot they used to be . and I survived the lot and am 76 on Monday !!!

  7. All very true Paul, and what great memories that has all brought back, and of course the schools were allowed to punish us without fear of a child abuse writ being slapped on them, I am so grateful I had that childhood rather than todays option.

  8. Excellent point lol i should not say that as i am a child of the 90s lol but it is so true.

  9. So true! We were really fortunate to have the freedom to explore, take risks, develop relationships and learn about ourselves and our world.

  10. Hate to burst the bubble but going all gooey and nostalgic doesn't make it right.Lets start from the top.

Are you trying to tell us that pregnant women smoking and drinking is fine?Have you seen any of the reports on the effects of both on unborn kids.Did your partner do both while pregnant?

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes. What about those that did and suffered the consequences?

Honest question-Who in their right mind nowadays would want their child to sleep in a lead based painted cot? What about the kids who did suffer the effects of it?Don't they count?

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles(kids died as a result), doors or cabinets(children swallowed caustic substances) and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets,(brain damage is a *****) not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking(would you in all seriousness let your child hitch hike?Even then it wasn't smart.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always exciting and great fun.

Except for the parents of the kids who died as a result of such stupidity.

I think you get the picture and that's without throwing in polio and thalidomide.

Every era has its good and bad points.

    Ouch!Not

  11. That's so bloody true.

  12. Spot on. I've seen it before, it was sent to me on my last birthday and wish I'd kept it then, looks like I've got my wish.

Misty, I think most of us recognize the flaws, that why it's the same generation that helped make the changes.

  13. i grew up during the 90s on Guam and my childhood was pretty much the same as this list here. i miss those carefree days.

  14. Nice one and very true! :)

  15. Ah but is not a joke ....... it is true!

I think that it is brilliant!

  16. Yes! Very good point!

I don't want to be negative but children aren't allowed to take risks now. The media and government have everyone convinced there is a padeophile on every street corner and a terrorist behind one in three doors. Even school trips are under threat because of compensation culture. Shame!

  17. Excellent point and I hope you don't mind if I copy that and put it in an email to show some others who don't realise they are born!

    Well done.

    *SL

  18. Them were the days ;)

Don't miss getting the cane though ...Ouch!

  19. As a child of the 50's I remember everything really well memories thanks Paul.

Happy birthday for monday Michael W.

  20. Thanks for the Reunion of my past days.....A wonderful time i had doing all that is listed......Do-gooders take heed. or never breed.

  21. That makes a lot of sense. Illustrates how much has gone wrong with society. Email it to the current government, can you. But, of course it will be not pc enough for them.

Edit - Haz - I am sure i knew you in a previous life. Back in 70`s Glos, mum of friend from school up the road from us, always made Angel Delight as a pudding. So sophisticated. Mind you, we always had Arctic Roll, at home. Lol.

  22. HA! It doesn't mention Butterscotch Angel Delight though does it?

Aah..'playing out' only ruined by my Mum hunting me down in the park screaming 'gerrin' for your bath!'

My kids play out though...In our road :-( They had a water fight the other week but all the kids have these 'super soakers' now. Not like us with Morning Fresh washing-up liquid bottles.

Does anyone remember putting a ball in a pair of old tights and thrashing it against a wall??? What was that all about!

  23. Very true!

  24. Oh c**p! That almost made me cry!

That was me completely, I ate dirt when I was a nipper, all the time.....and I'm o.k.....hgfckyrfdckyrfdyktftftfmfcmfcmfh...

    Kind of!

  25. An excellent point . Took me back a few years . LOL And we never complained of boredom like they do all the time now .

  26. Yes, I love that email, my daughter also sent it to me from America.

The best thing kids had also were, no computers, facebook, myspace & all the cell phones.

The inventions have impacted on kids & ruined their lives.

All the technology has stopped them playing & created the very opposite of what this email states.

  27. A very good point and all true.

  28. are yes i remember it well  good old days when we knew how to live and had respect

  29. had that twice before and it is so true

  30. it is true.

it just shows what a sad sad world we are living in today

  31. **So very true, how times have changed.**
