I like the look of the shorter barell and the stainless shine ince it doesnt come in nickel, but I've heard stainless steel is softer than the low carbon steel in the standard model, is that true doe you know?

  1. No. Its not true. Carbon Steel is softer than Stainless. Stainless steel in general is more brittle. Its good for making firearms becuase it easy to clean and it doesnt corrode. Since its a little more brittle, it might hold up a tad better.

  2. Stainless steel is much harder than carbon steel but it is easier to clean and maintain.

  3. The 1858 New Army is a fine choice.  It has a reputation for having a strong frame.  During the Civil War, Union soldiers preferred this model over the Colt 1860.

This one will be a lot of fun at the range.

  4. I have a 357 in stainless. If Ruger thinks stainless is OK for this magnum, it should not be an issue with the black powder. Plus, it will be easier to keep clean and will give you less trouble than steel because of the black powder. I think they are easier to clean also.

re the hardness. SS may be softer, but it is usually tougher.

  5. You will be very happy with that choice of handgun.

Happy shooting. Use the spit-patch to prevent chain fire.
