The horse named Robbie, do you think it would be okay for me to buy him as a starter horse? I know he's already 20, but he's still got at least a few years left on him.

Do you?

  1. He looks like a very unhealthy 20.

I bought my first starter horse when he was 15.  By looking at him, you could never tell, most people thought he was at max 8 years old.  Robbie looks old, used up, and unhealthy.

    Keep looking.

  2. I think he looks lovely, maybe have him on trial first for a week. Ride him, see what he's like. I think your a very nice person willing to buy this horse cause most people go for younger horses which results in the old horses becoming unwanted, and bad things can happen to unwanted horses.

  3. honestly, and i dont mean to sound mean or anything, but that horse looks like its about to drop dead.my advise is to save that mony and apply it towards a younger horse that fits your abilities.plus it will save u money if u think about all the vet bills u would have on this old one.hope i helped

  4. You could get one a good bit younger for the same price. I wouldn't consider buying anything that age even as a starter.

  5. i'd go with a 10 year-old. Robbie doesn't have good conformation does he lol. his head is so weird!

  6. I think that for a first horse he would be great.  He seems to be very sweet, appears to be an easy keeper (which isn't always easy to find in an older horse) and the price isn't too bad.  You can always negotiate the price.  Start low and see what happens.  Most likely the price is high to keep away the slaughter house buyers.

Take him for a ride and see if you two get along, and that you like how he feels (gait, handling etc.) if he's easy to handle, healthy and sweet, I'm sure he'd be a wonderful starter horse.

As far as his age, he's still relatively young - I had a mare that I was able to ride until she was 32.

  7. well it depends on if you want a younger horse or not. i think he is worth it. he still has around 10 or so left on him. i would buy him. I would think he would be better than a young horse because he is most likely calmer and has had more experience.

  8. You can get a great, wellbroke horse for that price and younger. They said he is looking for a "retirement" home, so he obvioulsy cannot do everything they want him to. I imagine he has some kind of arthritis or other condition if they are looking to retire him. I would keep looking. Remember, with patience you can find a great horse and not have to compromise.
