do you think this is a good idea? a DIY wedding store where you go from station to station, like centerpiece supplies, then lighting, then cake forms, then invitations, reams of fabric, etc....There would be some fun unique extras like candelabras or fun cake toppers. People would go to each station to select what they like, write down the item, then I would order the amount they need at wholesale prices so i could guarantee at least 10% below retail prices. And...for a small fee, like $10 each, I would put together the centerpieces. Maybe a consigned wedding attire part too? My thinking is that it will save people a lot of time and money.

Honest opinions please!

  1. This sounds like a great idea--like you said a time saver!  You would have to start with quite a bit of capital so you have a huge selection that will meet various tastes.  You could also involve other vendors in your business (for a small fee of course).  In a larger city, I think this would be a great success.  Good luck!!!

  2. thats a great idea. Are you gonna be in the houston area.JK.Thats an awesome idea though.

  3. As long as you had a variety of merchandise, I think it's a great idea. By that I mean, if you had all frilly, lacy, traditional stuff, I wouldn't go  there because I'm a "modern" bride who likes things very streamlined with modern twists to things.

So as long as you keep all types of brides and grooms in mind, then yes, it's a great idea.

  4. Where can I sign up?? lol

Great idea. I really like the way your thinking.

I would be willing to go. Most bridal functions I see cost money upfront, like a ticket price or cover charge. I would for sure be interested in going... even if you had a cover charge I would be willing to go as long as it didn't exceed 20 bucks.

I would offer some tips but I don't think it's needed. you got great ideas and it's pretty well thought through... anymore details and things could get complicated.

I say do a test run and perfect your workshop by experiance.

    good luck and great ideas

  5. I think you have a fabulous idea!  The idea that you've got is what I have based my business on...making weddings affordable and beautiful!  The biggest obstacle that I have faced is getting all the suppliers and keeping them straight.  There are so many out there!  But, most of them offer great wholesale prices for retailers, so you should be able to do what you've outlined.  The other problem is just money...having enough to get all those samples that you'll need.  I think I calculated once that to purchase samples from all the suppliers I have would cost me tens of thousands of dollars.  So, my advice would be to find suppliers that will sell you "retailer sample packs" so that you can still get samples of everything without having to purchase sets of 50 favors or 5 guest books in order to have samples for your clients to view.

Unfortunately, there's a lot more advice I could give you but not enough space to type it all here, so please feel free to visit my website: www.thecreativegirl.net or contact me through Yahoo! and I'd be happy to help you a little more!

Good luck with your fabulous idea!

  6. I think it sounds great, assuming you live in an area that would support it.  Would you have a seamstress on staff to custom make bridesmaids gowns or do alterations as well?

  7. I actually thought about starting this very same business.  I think its a great idea.   I had thought about including vendors such as a limo, a cake lady, etc. smaller vendors I know, who do a good job.  Also, I thought about (my husband is a computer guy) printing invitations for people while they shopped.  You pick out the invites, and 1 hour later, they are printed up and ready to go.  Honestly, I don't know why something like this doesn't already exist.  It only makes sense.  I would be interested in talking to you about your ideas.

I gave up the idea of doing this because I have sons who are going to college and we need money coming in, not money going out to start a business.  My husband and I are starting a wedding picture business for extra money instead.   My e-mail is nanci@keims.com
