this isnt that big of a deal, but im wondering what you think. i am 19 years old and i go to school in nyc, but i live in another part of ny. my moms aunt has a rent controlled apartment in a nice nyc area and wants to sign me on the lease. my mom told this to my aunt who has three kids: from 28-16, the youngest is nicholas. so she says, "oh good. maybe if amanda doesnt want it she can sign nicholas on the lease." now, i love my aunt, but

1. she doesnt really go to family functions or talk to the family. so no one owes her anything.

2. i go to college in nyc, so why wouldnt i want it? and wouldnt she be alarmed if i didnt want it? and why wouldnt the older kids want it?

3. she tries to get her share of things and she has been kind of greedy. dont get me wrong, if she had a lot of extra money she would give it to us, but still, dont you think this is presumptuous? thanks

  1. I'm California born and bred, and sorry, I don't understand the rent-controlled, lease sign-on thing, but I have dealt with relatives in business circumstances, and I advise you to give this a lot of thought.

    My questions would be:

Does your "signing on the lease" create some sort of financial obligation to you?

Do you know this aunt well enough to feel assured that she will not s***w you royally, in the deal?

Do you want that "obligation" or "indebtedness", even if all the circumstances are OK?

  2. I hate greedy relatives..always want things from us..when they don't need it..you have the clear right of saying "NO!"..explain to her why you need it more then her son Nicholas..and why it's important for you to remain there..god greedy dum aunt..i hav a lot of those in mi family circle...-_-'...so yea...tell her u need it cause ur still going to college and that you're not planing on moving out of there anytime soon..hope this helps

  3. Yeah, sounds messed up.
