i read in the paper that the council are going to kill some ducks at a country park near where i live just because they arent a native species. if the paper someone said there was only a few of them. whenever i go to the park i dont even see 1 duck never mind a few. im wondering why the wont get rid of the seagulls. they are more of a pain then ducks and there are far too many of them. i cant believe a seagull is a protected species

  2. This is a controversial question.

I'm an animal lover myself, but you have to think reasonably on this one: animals who are not native species of a certain area can get very out of hand (to put it mildly). Plenty of the time, everything is fine, regardless of whether it's a native species or not. But when things go wrong, they can go VERY wrong.

Take kudzu. I don't know if you have it in your area, but down here in Georgia it is a major nuisance and roadside eyesore. Kudzu is not a native species of Georgia, or even the US. It's from Japan, and it was brought here originally as a garden/decorative plant. However, this isn't Japan, and the environment is different. In Japan, there were elements in the environment that kept it under control--insects that eat it, weather conditions, etc. We don't have such controlling elements here, and kudzu has thus been able to run out of control. Once it took root, there was no stopping it. It has now destroyed many areas, killing trees and other native species around in competition for sunlight, etc.

So you see what can happen. It's not only plants, either--awhile ago, there was some new fish introduced to the Missouri river (not a native species). As there were no predators or other restricting elements in the new environmen, it ran out of control, and killed off many other species of fish. Same thing happened with a kind of frog in my state.

That's the reason behind it, and just know that I'm sure the council has good intentions--it's smart of them to get rid of these ducks. But I agree that killing themis too brutal. Since there are only a few of them, maybe you and your neighbors can arrange for the duck to be taken to a nature centre or something. Organize a new habitat for these ducks--but don't go hating on the council, because they're doing what's right.

[sorry to go on so long]

  3. that maes me mad! why would they kill the ducks? and your so right, seagulls are too plentiful and i dont think many people even like them (i do though=P) but i like ducks a heck of a lot more!

    protesttt

  4. The council will do this because someone came up with the idea and nobody fought it.

    "PROTEST"
