Do you think this is wrong?

I'm booking a hotel for my boyfriend and I in Philadelphia and for the contact information, it asks for my title, and the only options are Mr, Mrs, Miss and Dr. I usually go by Ms.

It's the Sofitel hotel owned by Accor hotels, which is based in France. Because they don't offer Ms. does that mean it's probably run by a conservative? I don't want to go to a hotel that's owned by conservatives.

  1. Sorry to tell you, but "Ms" is considered uncouth or silly in much of the world.  Americans love it, but most of the rest of us just don't see the point.

"Don't want to stay in a hotel owned by conservatives"?  Biased and oversensitive much?

    EDIT

One question that scomes up with the girls I teach is why women are more concerned about having a title that exactly describes thier marital status.  Men stick with "Mr", as there is no modern, commonly held title in English for an inmarried man, "Master" having fallen out of common use years ago.

So you will use an American chain hotel in preference. In the end it matters little and, without getting too personal, it is not really that big a deal or reason to go elsewhere, but to each their own.  By the way, why would you assume that the Marriot chain is necessarily Liberal, even if it includes "Ms" on it's forms?

  2. Dear lord. Could you over analyze a bit more please?

  3. It's because it's based in France.  In most of Europe there isn't an equivalent to Ms; adult women usually go by the equivalent of Mrs (Mme in France, Frau in Germany etc) even if they are unmarried.  Only very elderly unmarried women would call themselves Mlle or Fraeulein (the equivalent of Miss).

If I were you I'd chose Mrs instead of Miss and don't worry about it.  I don't think it means they're conservative.

  4. No, it's just people who have conveniently forgotten that some women don't wish to be defined by their marital status. Besides, a conservative-run hotel isn't always a bad one.

  5. I'd ask the management why they don't offer Ms in the title.  Europe is supposed to less conservative than other places so I would expect Ms to be an option.

  6. cross them all out and write Ms. in the first name box

  7. No I don't think lacking the Ms which is a non-marital identifying honor to be conservative.  Just choose Miss I am sure they will not get their panties in a bunch because you and the mister are not married.

Edit: Hey There why is Ms. for the gender sensitive?  Wouldn't it be more for those concerned they are being judged on marital status?

  8. it probably means that they haven't changed the form in 50 years.

i agree with the other writer, cross through MISS and write MS.

  9. Miss and Ms are the same thing.

  10. You have nothing more important to worry about?

    Select 'Miss.'

    Problem solved.

Only gender-sensitive American women use 'Ms.'

  11. most business people are conservative
