Question:

Do you think this may be covered by my home owners's insurance?

I recently had a small flood in our kitchen about a month ago due to a kitchen sink back up. My floor in the kitchen was wet..... and over the following days the laminate warped. I noticed it also happened in the hallway and in part of my living room. Does this sound like something that would be covered under a routine home owner policy? The back up was due to a dishwasher that ran a cycle and literally backed out onto the floor. Less than a few weeks later I noted a small leak from the washer tap in our washroom which is also off the hallway that is affected.

Please. advise.

  1. Yep...usually broken pipes or water leaks on the inside of your house that cause damage are covered under home owners policies. It's not flood damage due to bad weather...so contact your agent or claims number to have them send out an adjuster.

  2. You should call them and ask, you could be covered.....

Our  Hot water tank broke and flooded the house. We called a carpet company  to come out right away and they had advised us to call the Homeowners Ins and file for a claim. All went well and yes all was covered. I was afraid to call as I thought we would get a bad mark on us so I was not going to call....how silly....Our ins didn't even go up after that....Then about a year later, the roof blew off and heavy rains came in the house. The Ins replaced the roof, and took care of drying the carpeting. We had already replaced 1000 sq ft of carpet with good old waterproof ceramic floor tile....Thank Goodness. As that was an easy clean.

However, if there is normal upkeep to the home that has not been done they find that and deny claims. Been there too. One day while talking to my Dad on the phone I heard pinging and small breaking noises. I went to the sink and watched as the porcelain was popping off the sink and breaking when it hit the counter or into the sink. My Dad said that happens if the structure underneath becomes weak from a small leak, or structure is being undermined somehow. So he sais to call the Insurance Co. I did...I told them the truth as to what I experienced. They said I could call the manufacture of the sink and geta replacement as it is a ill manufactured sink and that wouldn't fall into a viable claim. I said Oh. She told me if I had dropped a big heavy pan on the sink and that caused the problem, then yes it would be covered. So beings I am honest....we couldn't get a replacement via the Insurance.

We remoldeled the kitchen a few years later and I got a new sink afterall....
