Because Jason Bay is doing great with the Red Sox, but is it worth it?

  1. It was good for Boston to get rid of Manny, but not Craig Hansen. I think he has a ton of potential and can develop into a great RP. His slider is ridiculous.

  2. When Sox management met with some of the veterans and they said it was time for Manny to go then any deal was worth it. This is a group that knows what it takes to win and they felt Manny wasnt part of the winning culture they need to contend this season. When you quit on the guys in the lockerroom then it is always time to go....he didnt have their backs so they didnt take his.Not playing against the Yankee's had to disgust his teammates, that spoke volumes of his dedication (or lack of). So to answer your question...the players spoke and asked management to remove who they felt was a cancer. And a comparision of Bay and Manny this years suggests they save 12.5 mill to get basically the same production. I know Manny is the better "talent" but in baseball you win nothing with potential, it is all accomplished with production and having a mutaully respectful lockerroom. If management catered to Manny again then I would bet the rest of the lockerroom might not have it in them to keep working as hard, why should they if the so called best player doesnt have to? YES, it was worth it!

  3. Yeah I think it was a good idea. Nobody was happy, neither Manny or the Red Sox.

  4. Any time you can get rid of a headache like Manny Ramirez, you've done well.  His twenty million dollar salary could be better spent on someone else.  I'm not going to say that Manny isn't a money RBI guy, but he really doesn't put up huge home run numbers and his average isn't up there at the top of the league.  He's a very good hitter, but for the money he's being paid, the Red Sox could do better.  He's a liability defensively and he's apparently a selfish and adolescent idiot if he doesn't get his way.  Baseball is a team sport that doesn't need that kind of garbage.

It'll be interesting to see what will happen if Manny doesn't soon tone his act down.  Barry Bonds ran himself right out of baseball by thoroughly p***ing off everybody around him.  Manny could wind up doing exactly the same thing.

  5. Yes.

People who disagree are comparing the players talent against each other, but the real question is "does it make the team better?". And the answer is, yes it makes the team better.

First of all, the whole team plays better with Manny gone. Secondly, they get Bay for MUCH less than they would have paid Manny. Third, they have him locked up for next year, and no way they would have had Manny for the $20 million next year. So that gives them an extra $12.5 million per year that they can spend in the free agent market. I would love to see them spend that on a good shortstop.

I think Brandon Moss is a loss, but they have other outfielders who will play as well.  Hansen does have a strong arm, but he has had PLENTY of chances to get his act together and has still not done it. he may some day, and he may be better off in the NL (with no DH), but I think we would never reach his potential in Boston, and they have plenty of other great young arms.

So was it a good deal? The rest of this year and all of next year will tell, but I think YES right now.

  6. fact-

jason bay is in his prime, he's 29, and he still isn't as good as manny who is out of his prime

i miss manny, he was one of the favorites from the majority of the fans and was a huge contributer to the sox winning the whole shabang.. twice. i wish he was just more of a team player in the sense he showed more respect for the teammates around him.. it's really sad to find out now that all of the teammates, except for alex cora, wanted manny traded. then you realize it probably WAS the right decision, which hurts even more.

so in the skill sense, manny was better. but as a teammate and effort, jay is the right guy.

    the truth hurts

  7. NO!!!!! The idea for getting rid of Manny was to get one of the top 3 relievers in the league...instead the sox got rid of one of their own relievers and got someone who isnt as good as manny anyway....RIP-OFF the Dodgers got the best out of this one..

  8. I think it will be, Manny's definitely a better hitter, but he quit on the Sox so we weren't going to see his best in Boston anymore.  That makes comparing Manny's LA performance to his Boston performance a moot point.  I really like what I've seen from Jason Bay so far, he's a quiet, unassuming, get the job done guy, he reminds me a lot of Mike Lowell.  As far as the other players, I'll miss Brandon Moss, but Craig Hansen was too inconsistent to keep using.

  9. Well since I think the Sox wanted to get rid of Manny I'd say yeah. They replaced him with someone who is younger and is talented, so didn't lose anything with Manny. Sure they paid more to get rid of Manny then they got in return, BUT teams knew they were looking to get rid of Manny so they weren't going to get equal value. Heck he won a game for them(he had both RBIs in a 2-1 game). Plus you aren't going to get the antics you got with Manny. I mean if you didn't mind them then fine, but I'd think they would get tiresome.

  10. I think the Red Sox were so desperate to get rid of Manny that they had to do what they had to do.  They gave up a lot.  Manny's attitude was awful and his teammates were tired of defending his actions. I think it was pretty much unanimous that he had to go and any cost.
