  1. Sometimes at private or rural crossings, the engineer is not required to sound the whistle, if it can be seen that no one is approaching the crossing.  And as someone said above, in certain communities, the city may have requested that the railroad not sound the whistle during certain hours.

  2. You probably mean train driver (European) or train engineer (American), but many municipalities enact laws that prohibit trains from sounding their horn during certain evening hours, since car traffic is at a minimum and people are trying to sleep.  These laws supersede the railroad's rules requiring the train crew to sound the horn at a grade crossing.

If only a few trains are failing to sound the horn, it's possible that either some engineers have taken it upon themselves to refrain, in violation of the operating rules, for the same reasons that the anti-noise laws are enacted.  If only a few still sound the horn late at night, it's likely, the law against sounding the horn has just recently been enacted, and the ones sounding the horn still do so out of force of habit.

  3. I don;t think they fall asleep, they have shifts they work. but nothing is impossible.

  4. You mean Train Engine drivers, ...

Normally there are two in each engine. So we can't guess how they manage to nap.  (Cant sleep at any cost.. there is no bed...?)

As regards the whistle, some may ignore to, anticipating none is crossing the rail.

  5. On freight trains, there's an alerter that goes off when the conductor doesn't move any of the controls for a certain period of time.  Every couple minutes or so the conductor has to press a reset button to prevent the alarm from going off. It prevents them from falling asleep.

  6. yea i think they do fall asleep when we all know we shouldn't.  for people that drive public transportation, if you don't have a lot of energy, then your job could definitely be a lot harder.  thats real close to a freight rail road too, lol.
