Do you think trips to coral reefs should be banned or reduced drastically?

It has came out that sun lotion causes coral bleaching. It is thought that many areas are effected by this, with it even turning into a toxic byproduct in fish! All those visitors to places such as the Great Barrier reef must have a huge effect! Even the most careful diver/snorkler is likely to break a bit off with their fins or something! Is there anything already in place? Certain parts of touristy reefs closed off to recoup?

  1. yes. people are not careful enough about the environment and habitat of our wildlife therefore they should not be able to tamper with it anymore

  2. Yes i do, either or both would make a huge difference to the life of the coral & the species which rely on it. A reduction in the souvenir trade would also help it to survive as pieces are often broken off to make jewellery or ornaments for tourists and it takes years for the coral to grow to its original shape.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) may have more information on the methods which are currently in place to protect coral reefs around the world.

    Their website is : http://www.epa.gov/owow/oceans/coral/

    Hope this helps =)

  3. I'm at odds to weigh the value of dimming the sunlight vs. introducing VOC's , into this specific habitat. In the grand scheme of things, I suspect that the reefs would fair much better if shaded from the sun,at this moment in time. Watch PBS's 'Global Dimming' documentary.  It will rock your world!

  4. Yes I think it should. There is less natural beauty in the world without having it ruined by pollution from people and their boats.
