Question:

Do you think we got ripped off?

Had a pizza delivered, charge was $15 and change. My child (age 13 but looks YOUNG) wanted to pay so I gave him instructions, gave him a $20 and let him. Driver took the $20 and said, "you ordered pepperoni pizza. -- SHORT pause -- So, we're OK?" Then he split.

HE NEVER EVEN OFFERED TO MAKE CHANGE FOR THE KID.

I think he took advantage of the fact that he was dealing with a kid. We live <0.5 mile from the store and typical tip would be $1-2 because the store charges a delivery fee, too. I think he knew darn well he was getting away with something. So I marched into the store to get my change back.

Then I felt bad because the delivery guy came out and said he really honestly thought we meant to give a $5 tip. I think he did feel upset by the fact I came back to the store angry. But maybe he was only upset because now he's in trouble.

So I ask -- what do you think? Were we getting taken advantage of? Or were we out of line?

  1. sounds fishy to me...why would he try to explain the excess and say we are OK unless he was either asking "are we ok?" or was trying to get away w/something.

Did you son specifically ask for change back?? many times when you hand a delivery guy money they assume unless you ask its exact change and or an amount with a tip.

sounds like it could be a miscommunication or maybe he was taking advantage. could honestly go either way!

next time you might want to have you son be more specific or just handle the paying yourself...to avoid confusion and or people taking advantage

  2. five bucks doesnt seem too unreasonable... he most likely thought it was the tip

  3. sue !!

  4. why didn't you tell your kid to ask for change? 13 isn't too young to speak, right?

i really don't know whether you got ripped off or not. given that most people are dishonest, he probably did try to take advantage.

but was your indignant response worth it? let's look at it this way. typical tip is $1-2? which is kind cheap. so let's assume you would have been generous and given $2.

so you would have given $17 and change.

you went charging off over a little over $2?

you probably spent that on the gas to drive down and demand your change back.

i think you ripped yourself off.

  5. I think it was a little of both. He probably knew the kid wouldn't know any better to speak up and say "No I need some change please." But at the same time, I'm not sure it was worth shooting your blood pressure through the roof to go back there. Perhaps it was so that guy wouldn't try to intentionally rip any one off again.....it's just a matter of choosing your battles. It sounds like you won this one.

  6. The child didn't act like he wanted change - nor did he say he wanted change. It's as if he agreed with the delivery guy when he said, "so, we're okay'?

It is understandable he thought he was getting a $5.00 tip.

  7. Were we getting taken advantage of? - Yes

Or were we out of line? - somewhat- going to the store and requesting the guy make right was OK. getting mad was unnecessary.

You live less then a 1/2 mile from the store, gas should not be wasted, you should have walked and picked up your own pizza. Saved the tip and got some exercise.

  8. Well- probably out of line.....you did say that SHORT PAUSE......So, we're OK? - You didnt say if you child was nodding yes....or giving non-verbal actions of "here is your money and I am turning to go eat"......

If your child didn't stand there with the hand out , like where is my change...... then the drive probably thought that was the tip. Sounds like the drive did "feel upset" about the situation-- you too- right? Its one of those "learning experiences" if you are teaching and letting a youngster "learn to pay".

I'd consider calling the driver and clear it up-- so you BOTH feel $5 better!

  9. I dont think you were out of line at all. Its hard to say for sure if he Really thought he was getting a $5 tip. Maybe he figured your kid would have stopped him if he wasnt supposed to get the tip. Either way you were ripped oof, because that is a huge tip.

  10. Congratulations on paying more in gas than you would have tipped already.

Was it really worth the aggravation to get your $5 back?

Next time don't be so lazy and pay for it yourself.

  11. He's probably ticked off because he got caught taking advantage of a little kid. It's presumptuous to assume you're getting a big tip for a cheap pizza. I think you did the right thing, and hopefully he will learn a valuable lesson.

  12. its a good lesson for your kid, tell him that next time say no, and ask for change.

  13. He was probably lying if he said "So, we're OK?" to someone that looked like a kid.

  14. DUDE ok you were totally out of line i mean its 3 dollars thats totally uncalled for to go back to the store the pizza dude thought he got the 5 dollars if you dont say can i have the change then they think its theres you know but ya id feel sorry too lol :l

  15. no way he definitely took advantage of the fact that it was a kid paying and figured he/she didn't know any better about prices or tips. Pizza delivery does not warrant a five dollar tip unless you like to tip big.

  16. I agree with you. A $5 tip on $6is over a 30% tip. Who does this delivery punk think he is? He should have at least gave $2 or $3 back. He was taking advantage of your child, especially if the store is right around the corner. I think he's just afraid of getting fired.

  17. tip would 4 and some change i would of given it all to the driver anyway i would not of made a big deal out of it for 4 dollars

  18. The delivery guy was taking advantage of your child. He was probably ordered to apologize.

But that can be a lesson for your 13 year old. Don't be generous with your money. Next time tell him to ask for the

change. It is a good experience.

Glad you went to the store and got the change back.

  19. Since your child hasnt had enough experience with financial transactions, to ask for the change, or to give a tip. Just handed him the money. ( MANY do just say keep the change)

You should accompany him and teach him.

Chalk it up to parenting this time.

The driver might have thought you were generous tippers.

He said " So we are ok ? " What was the response there ?

I feel the fault lies squarely with you. Sorry ! You shirked youre responibility . I cant believe you actually went to the store and got your change.

    You didnt want to cook.

You didnt want to go get food. Couldnt be bothered to even go to the door.

Yet you have the energy to make a fuss out of a couple bucks, and possibly put a minimum wage delivery boy out of a job--who in asking this question, you still have doubts about his intent.
