  1. It's a natural survival instinct to be a predator but now that we are civilised we try not to get onto fist fights the more cunning we are the less subtle our actions.

  2. "Predation" is a term used to describe the apex predator taking advantage of a weaker species.

This type of social activity is very prevalent in society.  It has been called "The Pecking Order", after the habit of the strongest fowl establishing dominance over the flock, or in a business/corporate environment.

In young people, it manifests itself in physical activities, such as sports, intelligence, sexual attraction, and yes...fights too.

In prehistory, such activity guaranteed breeding rights to the strongest, most intelligent, best looking specimens, which in turn ensured the best genes survived.

How often does it happen?   Every single day in a thousand different ways.  Fights at parties are generally reserved to teenage males and usually alcohol.  Although women can serve as an equal, if not more effective enticement to male violence.
