i cannot really swim. do you think i will drown? i mean surely desperation will get me back to the kayak right? or i will just doggy paddle to shore? or maybe i will just really learn to swim well quickly. i think i can swim but not well at all. not at all. but i am still gonna go out to sea!

  1. If you continue to paddle, you should learn to swim.  You should also get some kayak instruction on wet exits and rolling.  You can re-enter a sea kayak after it has flipped and pump out the water.

  2. I think I'd rethink going out to sea in a kayak

  3. Dear hart...your fish food.

  4. This is very important:  you should NOT take a kayak out into the open sea until you have practiced flipping over (called a "wet exit") and climbing back into your kayak in a shallow lake or swimming pool with proper instruction.  You don't have to be a strong swimmer but you should be comfortable in the water and able to keep your wits about you if you capsize.  "Desperation" and panic are the worst things that could happen to you -- if you have never experienced a wet exit and getting back into a boat under controlled conditions you will never be able to do it at sea!  You will panic and you could easily drown as well as put other people at risk trying to rescue you.

Kayaking is a fun and usually very safe sport as long as you are properly prepared.  You will enjoy it more if you know before going out that you have had the right training and will be able to handle the situation if you flip over.

Please have someone teach you what to do and then have a great time!
