  1. Good question. I've always said I can smell rain until you asked. I realise now that it's the smell of the damp ground/earth which precedes it.

  2. yes  very much so ,just before it falls down from the heavens, i can also smell a fox dont ask me why but i can ,just a quirk of nature

  3. YES YOU CAN IT SMELLS LIKE BEACH WATER SOMETIMES BEFORE IT RAINS OR LIKE WET SOIL

  4. NoO LoL

  5. Sorta.

Beside the fact that rain cleans the air, falling rain produces a lot of positive ions.

The ionized air changes how well your nose picks up the smells. Also ionized air makes particulates clump and fall out of the air.

So it definitely smells different but it is not the water you are smelling.

They advertise positive ionizers by saying it makes it smell like a waterfall. (Same process).

And where I live in the Northwest US, sometimes we get a warm weather system in the winter that comes directly in a straight shot all the way from Hawaii. They call it the "Pineapple Express". And you can actually smell it.

And they say almost a third of the pollution in LA is now coming from China.

So a storm system can bring in lots of smells from elsewhere.

  6. I know I can.

  7. Absolutely, my husband always laughs when I say it smells like rain but I'm usually right.

  8. what I smell is the increased humidity, which increases the smell from other things..

when I was young, I lived very near the ocean, when it was going to rain and my mom said she could smell rain, all I smelled was an increase in the amount of sea smell in the air.

Now that I live inland, I smell dirt right before it rains.

  9. Oh yeah, you can smell it in the air.  It is usually after the rain that you can smell it so strong...it is a great smell.  It may be the wet earth and all of the other wet trees etc that we smell but the smell is still there.

  10. Nope, what you're smelling is Ozone.

  11. Not the rain itself just effect on the atmosphere

It seems thicker somehow, higher pressure

    things like that.

  12. yes,, you can defo smell a good storm coming
