Most teachers don't take me seriously and even when I get good grades they still kind of have a mind set that i'm not that smart. I think its because I don't really look smart. e.g. I have fake platnum blonde hair and my clothes arn't that well... covered. They are definitely not THAT bad though and there are other people in my class that are worss like with tons of facial piercings and stuff. The only pierings other than a few in each ear. I really want to be respected more but I don't know what to do. Any advice???

  1. Let them get over. That's the only way to make them mad. If you know you're smart that's all that matters. Hey, you'll be the one that gets a GOOD job.

  2. Umm definatly maybe not me specifically but let me put it this way.Our English Teacher (sophmores) hes 35 you think he looks the same way at the girl nobody wants to date or the girl that always has a guy with her(is hot). Of the same at the guy who is smartest in class compared to the one is is most foolish. Ya the way you look changes there opinion on you guaranteed. But your behavior is what they look at most.

  3. Stop wearing revealing clothes.

You're at school have some class and maybe they'll actually take you seriously.

I didn't mean to sound rude but if you cut down on the make up and dress properly then maybe you'll get the respect you've been wanting.

  4. it would help definitely; youre lucky though, schools over here have uniforms... ugh..

  5. umm, u want people to taske you seriously? stop making yourself look like a barbie doll!! cut back to a tiny amount of covr-up when necesary, clear lipgloss, and  bit of brown mascara. the platinum hair wont help either, and COVER YOURSELF...

  6. I think that teachers like Nichole are in the minority. They might not even be aware that they are reacting in a certain way but students who come to school looking like they are there to study, rather than go to a party or pick up boys, are going to be treated with more respect. If you want more respect, find a style that still suits you but isn't so revealing and tone down the makeup.

The simple fact is that women like Pamela Anderson and the late Anna Nicole are treated with a certain derision because of the way they look and dress. Everyone has a chance to reinvent themselves. Find the you you want to be to get the respect you deserve.

  7. Truthfully, it does. It shouldn't, but it's human nature. (Now, not all teachers do that, but most do)

Of course, all teachers are different. Some only pay attention to what's on the outside, and go from there. And some teachers take notice to personality, perseverance, etc, and favor some more than others from that stance.

I know they try not to, but they can't help but pick favorites. I teach a class of kindergartners over the summer, and I have favorites without doing so on purpose. Although I don't treat anyone differently, some stand out more than others.

If you want more respect, you don't necessarily have to change anything about your appearance. If anything, you could cover up a little more I guess, or wear less makeup, but that's not needed. Simply be friendly and kind to everyone, and don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with the teacher. They will see you in a whole new light! Also, show concerns about grades, and what you can do to bring them up. (if needed) it show responsibility

  8. Sweetie... I am a teacher and let me tell you I have never once treated any of my students differently based on apperance.  If you are a good student, respectful and responsible that is all your teachers want from you..  There are always a few teachers that should not be teaching though.  Just keep asking yourself if you are making yourself happy... if so then that is all that matters.Good Luck!!

  9. if you change your appearance for every person that doesn't like the way you look you will be changing it ever day... and they probably thought that you where going to be a bad student b4 you ever walked n2 their class... especially if you did bad in previous years... b/c teachers talk and once they think something of you they usually dont change their minds... just dont worry about it... and try to keep the grades up:)

  10. it depends on the teacher but usually they don't care about that. my teachers are always nice to students no matter how they look.

  11. Yeah, you appearance does effect the way the teacher looks at you. There is a whole lot of preppy girls at my school, my math teacher(a perve), he lets the preppy girls do anything  they want. I actually got 2 days I ISS. I forgot to do my math homework(I was tired) and he was like "Why didn't you do your math homework"...

There was all these preppy girls, that he didnt even say nothing to so I was like "You didnt say nothing to them  Hoes over there,(I actually pointed them out), so when you say something to them I will start doing my homework".

Haha. The stupid teacher told the principle. Oh well somebody had to do it.

  12. Start dressing how you want people to think of you. If you look like a dumb blond, people will treat you like one. It's just how people are.

  13. Forget what the teachers thinks about you who cares? They are there to grade your work not your clothes. Oh you cant look nice and get good grades at the same time? They were young once too you know.

  14. I think it does!

Teachers acted different with they way i dressed and i was straight A's.

I went to one school and had blonde hair real but also platnum and dressed well probably about the same as you. Not well covered well.. i heard teachers talking about me and they always rolled their eyes at me.

Then i went to a different school.

Dyed my hair Brown and dressed a little more covered up and teachers treated me with respect.

  15. Rose, it isn't just teachers, it's everybody that meets you tha has an opinion by your appearance.  If you dress like a prep, you get treated one way.  You dress like a punk or grunger or goth, or whatever the current non-trend is, you will get a wholly different reaction.

  16. It's definitely true that teachers judge you by the way you look.  There have been many studies done on this.  For example, here's one I read about:  100 teachers were given copies of the same essay to grade.  Attached to the essay was an ID tag with a small picture of the "student".  Half the pictures showed a girl dressed in a conservative collared shirt with a neat, traditional hairstyle; the other half showed a girl with a tight t-shirt, heavy makeup, big earrings and a trendy haircut.  And you probably guessed it: the teachers gave higher grades to the essays that were supposedly written by the more "studious" looking students... even though the essays were all identical!

They didn't do this intentionally.  Every one of those teachers believed they were grading that paper fairly.  But deep in their subconcious, a little voice was saying: smart-looking student = this essay will be good.  S****y-looking student = there will probably be a lot of mistakes.

It's not just teachers who judge people by the way they look.  Everyone does it.  Even you do it, although you may not want to admit it or even realize you do it.  But it's something we all do subconciously.  A person's appearance is the first thing we notice about them, and we immediately form an opinion of them based on what we see.  And that opinion is based on our previous experience with other people who look or dress or act the same way.

Of course, once we get to know someone better, our opinion of them may change.  But that first impression can be hard to shake, and it can effect how we look at someone for a long time.

The sad truth is, the way you look and dress DOES effect how people judge you.  Is it fair?  Not at all.  But unfortunately, it's just a fact of life.  If making a good impression on your teachers is really important to you, you might consider making some changes in the way you dress.  But if it's more important to you to look and dress the way you want, then that's what you should do.  But just realize that there will be people who will judge you on what they see, even though it might not be an accurate judgement.

  17. No, you don't have to prove yourself to anybody. Love you for who you are, if you can't do that, then how can anyone else can?

  18. i kind of know what you mean. just do your best work and don't worry about what they think.

  19. act more maturely. it has nothing to do with your appearance. even if you have loads of piercings but you COOPERATE in class, DO your homework, GET good grades, BE active in school activities, HELP AND RESPECT teachers, and DO NOT SWEAR...teachers will take you seriously.

note: do everything i wrote above

  20. yeah i dress oversized and in dark colors.  and teachers think im either being abused, suicidal have a lot of problems. i get sick often so that doesnt help. and i lose my voise a lot which really doesnt help cause when i dont answer they think im dumb. then i get A's (oh yeah honor roll)

and there is no help just prove them wrong and smile cockily at them (tehehe im smart so there)

  21. Teachers do not judge you based on your physical appearance. I know many "ugly" people who have 4.0s. The job of your teacher is to judge the quality of work and effort in their class. They are supposed to educate you, not conform you. If you want respect from other people, just dress more conservatively, I suppose. Stop dressing in a provocative way if you think it is preventing you from being respected.
