  1. Call up your school district and ask to speak with someone who can tell you what the cutoff score was last year and the year before for the top 25% in the MCAS. Tell them you are applying for the John and Abigail Adams tuition scholarship and you would like to know approximately where you stand with your score of 260. Since you scored "advanced" and they sometimes even give the scholarship to the "proficient" level if they are within the top 25%, it does sound like your chances are really good. But by finding out exactly what the cutoff score was in previous years, you will at least know whether yours is comfortably above it. It does seem hard to have to wait more than a year to find out for sure! But keep on working hard, and I know you are going to make it. My very best wishes to you in all your future endeavors.

Edit: It just occurred to me they might have some of those results posted online, and they do, at

You can type in the name of your district and find out the average district-wide combined score for 2007 or for 2006. Just add up the ELA and the Math scores listed under CPI. That still won't tell you what the top 25% cutoff score was, but it will give you a ballpark estimate of where you stand. For example, in the Lowell District, the average 10th grade combined score for 2007 was 156.90, and yours was more than 100 points above that. But do call your District Office to get the exact cutoff, and the chances are good it will be pretty close this year to last year's.
