Question:

Do you turn on red?

My driving teacher today was being a ***** and kept yelling at me and made my drive time today horrible. It's my 4th time so I have experience, but she kept stopping me and saying I was doing this and that wrong and one time she even stopped the car for 1 min just to lecture me on "stopping on red lights (because she was distracting me, I stopped alittle late)".

Anyways one of her contradictions that I didn't catch until now was her saying "you can turn on red". I was on a country road at that time and when we approached a red light she said "you can turn on red".

But when I was on a city road and I was slowing down and about to turn, she hit the brakes (drivers ed cars have 2 brakes) and was like "YOU HAVE TO STOP"... wdf?! I WAS GOING TO STOP.

Sorry for long random story, but can you turn on red (to the right)? I thought you could, but she kept confusing me.

  1. Yes unless it states different................

  2. Well, THIS OLD HAG is a Driving Instructor.

It sounds to me as if you just might have a "personality conflict", in which case you might want to change your Instructor. That shouldn't be a problem for either of you. Instructors worth their salt, do know there will be times when there is a conflict with "personalities", and accept this.

I have taken other Instructor's students and vice versa over the past 35 years in my career.

If you remain with this Instructor, perhaps you have to clarify your questions?  Perhaps she needs to clarify her responses and her instructions to you.

As far as turns at red lights are concerned, it depends where you live.

In some states it is illegal. It sounds like it is legal where you live from what your Instructor said.

So, this is what I would tell you.............

"When approaching a red light, you may turn RIGHT from a two way street onto another two way street IF you stop first.

A red light means STOP.....completely!.....Once you have stopped, check for any oncoming vehicles attempting to make a left turn in front of you, watch for any pedestrians in the crosswalk, and make a shoulder check over your right shoulder. By the way, you must stop before the stop line, just so that it disappears over the hood of your car. When it is safe to do so, you may then make your RIGHT turn on that red light. You may only turn LEFT on a red light if you are turning from a one way street onto another one way street.

You must also enter the closest available lane going in your direction.

  3. You can turn right on red, but other traffic have the right of way first.

  4. If your going right. but still you have to yield. And it should be safe to proceed.

  5. yes, just stop look for traffic and go. heck if its the middle of the night i even turn on red when making a left, lol. thats not legal though so dont do it, lol.

  6. hi

red means stop first ,wait till its clear then make turn unless posted on sign no turns on red light

or no turns on red light between the hours of 6:00

to 9;00am  im so sorry about your teacher but you can put in a complaint thru the dmv occupational

licensing dept about this person !! your family paid for a service that not being met good luck

  7. You can turn right on red. Just make sure their or no signs indicating your can't turn right on red. Always make sure you come to a complete stop first and yeild to oncoming traffic. It sounds like you need to find another teacher. That lady sounds like a real a hole.

  8. There is no contradiction.  You do have to stop.  You are allowed to turn BUT ONLY AFTER YOU STOP.

You should study this stuff before your next lesson.

Also, I think you need a different teacher.

  9. In Mexico is perfectly allowed to turn in red always that no car came >;-)

  10. You can turn on red AFTER you stop, then go if no one is coming. Unless there is a sign posted that says no turn on red.

  11. you can turn right on red but you have to stop first. there are many intersections where there are signs saying no turn on red. I don't think you are as experienced as you think you are. listen to your instructor.

  12. Most intersections have a wide line called the "stop line". You have to come to a complete stop first for about 2 seconds and then start to make your turn on red.

But she shouldn't yell at you or try to make you feel like c**p. Learning to drive is hard enough. That'll just make you nervous.
