Do you use Freecycle?

I'm just wondering how many people are involved with a Freecycle group, and where you live. I live in Nova Scotia. I was very happy to find out that we had a Freecycle group here. We found it at a perfect time because we were moving! I love it!

  1. no we dont and i live in schenectady new york

  2. I am involved with a Freecycle(TM) group and I live in Pennsylvania.  If there is not a Freecycle(TM) group near you please feel free to email Freecycle(TM) and talk to them about starting up a new group for in your area, the older groups maybe county groups so you may not be looking for the group the correct way and there maybe one with many many members already up and running :)

Freecycle(TM) gets the name out for the groups, through News Paper articles, Magazine articles, online reviews etc.

As for owners/moderators needing to approve your membership--some groups ask that you live in their area in order to join...no sense someone from across the world joining a group if they are not going to be or can't be an active member of the group :)

  3. I love Freecycle! When my ex husband moved out, he left literally tons of stuff behind. I've been shoveling it out, mainly through Freecycle, since then.

I've gotten some cool stuff too. When my old PDA died, I got one just like it from Freecycle. It is pretty old, but I could just plug it into my software and cradle, and go!

*Sillygirl,* the approvals for membership are meant to weed out spammers and people from the wrong area. For example, we are in the US and someone from Australia wanted to join. We referred him/her to their local group instead. So give it a try!

  4. I use it and I live in Chicago.

  5. i used to use it when i lived in arkansas. i was sad to learn there was not one in operation in my new home in iowa so i am figuring i will become a moderator and start one for my new town....but how to make people aware of it? more people need to know about freecycle and craigslist and use it.....:D

  6. i just checked web for the one in s.a.,tx, it says the moderator will decide yes or no if they will accept you..i would think at least give people the opportunity to look at the stuff or whatever and then decide to join or not, seems this is not for me

  7. i am a member of my local freecycle group in alberta canada. to the person that didn't join b/c the moderator had to approve them.....our group also has moderated membership. most moderators are interested in having members that believe in the concept of reusing materials and goods and in keeping stuff out of the landfills, rather than just people who want "free stuff". our moderator ask new members to make their first post and "offer" rather than a "wanted". ours is  a very busy group and most offered items are taken within a day or two.

i work in a non-profit thrift store and we have referred dozens of people to freecycle when they have large items to give away that we don't have space for.members of our group have given away large appliances, cars, furniture, plants, building materials, music related items, clothing andjsut about anything else you can think of. i would recommend it to any community.
