Question:

Do you use Math-U-See? Do you like it?

My daughter hates math. I have tried most everything- math computer games, videos, regular board games, about 5 different curriculums.

I have heard a lot of good things about Math-U-See and wonder how it worked for your family. Anyone use it with a "difficult" child?

  1. We also love it.   The nice thing about MUS is that they explain the WHY of math.  I didn't learn that in school - I just learned how to do it but I didn't understand it.  I hated math.

My kids are learning the why of math and that makes it much easier.

  2. We love MUS!  My son likes math, but some other methods just didn't stick with him.  MUS is nice because it gives me a clear way to explain things to him.  He enjoys watching the video with me, so sometimes he just explains it right back to me.  I hope you find something that works for her.

  3. We love it.  I know it doesn't work for everyone (nothing does), but it sure helped us out.

My son loves math, but he hates the traditional teaching of most books, and the "spiral" scope and sequence of them had him so confused that he actually lost all of his math facts.  I tried him on MUS, and he went through 5 books in a year and a half with almost perfect retention.  He really enjoyed the DVD lessons - I even found him sneaking the DVD and a portable player up to his room after bedtime to watch it, lol!

He's gone through the entire sequence that leads up to pre-algebra and is now taking VideoText Algebra.  (I just liked the scope and sequence of it better, and it made more sense to him.)  However, without the MUS foundation, it likely wouldn't have made a l**k of sense to him.  Now, he's breezing through it with a 98% average.

I have a friend whose children hate math as well, and they absolutely love MUS.  It's made math understandable and even fun, and they don't complain about it anymore.  She swears by it for every one of them.

    Hope that helps!

  4. Yes we like it.  I have one child who can't learn numbers for anything.  She rather likes MUS.  I like the low key, low stress format.  I like to see a program that doesn't assume we will all become mathematicians.   We all need basic math and if we are not so inclined we shouldn't have to beat ourselves up over it.   It's too soon to tell if it's working but so far we really like it.
