I don't because I think it is very cruel.

  1. Hi Cheshire Cat-you are spot on! Another good reason for doing a fishless cycle is it is usually quicker & more controllable.

In this day & age with all the accumulated knowledge of the fishkeeping 'pros' via the internet there really is no excuse to use the old & cruel archaic method any more.

  2. No, I don't for the very reason you mention.  I use cocktail shrimp to cycle aquariums.

  3. Nope..I don't use..I always use fish food to cycle it...

  4. i did for my piranha tank cuz my piranhas were gonna eat meat anyways might as well feed them fish

  5. it will cycle faster with out fish in the tank and it will take more time with the fish in the tank. if you want to cycle with out fish here is what you do. go to a store and but a water test kit. put a little ammonia in the tank and keep on testing it day after day till the ammonia level is zero. then nitrite levels will start to rise. do the same thing and keep testing day after day till the nitrite levels are zero then you are good to go
