Question:

Do you use a forward press with the new Odyssey Sabertooth putter?

I normally play with a forward press of my hands with my Ping Redwood. The Odyssey Sabertooth sits alot different and when I forward press the loft is completely gone.

I play the ball about three balls forward of center with this putter.

When I let the putter stand naturally (without a forward press) and I address the ball, the ball is extremely forward of center and my right hand seems to push the putter more. I'm not sure if this is good or not as I'm still playing with the setup.

Regardless of the odd look of forward pressing and getting rid of the loft, this new putter is deadly for alignment and its getting harder for me to go back to my favorite putter the Ping Redwood Anser blade putter.

Has anybody tried it yet and does anybody use a forward press?

  1. Pressing forward is usually a technique that is used to deloft the putter, which is what it does with the odyssey as well.  What you might be noticing in that the ping has more loft than the odyssey, and when you press it forward, your eyes like the loft created.  but when you press the odyssey, you deloft too much and you dislike this.  However, if you really like the alignment factor, which is a main selling point of the odysseys, the loft can be made to fit your eyes as well.  You can do one of two things...

1.) You can keep practicing with the odyssey, experimenting with pressing distance, ball position, and other things for awhile.

    or..

    2) you can take the easier way out, bring the putter into a custom fitting place, have them analyze your putts, and have them bend the putter to your exact specs...This is a bit expensive, but for putting it is worth it...

I hope this helps you man, I really like the Redwoods, they are pretty rare.  You should keep it just in case you end up not liking the odyssey.  Putting is all about confidence and feel.  Get used to the odyssey, and then make a decision...

  2. if you used a forward press in your putting stroke , continue to use it . rember the putter head should never get ahesd of the shaft . it is a very slight decrease in loft , if any . the difference would just be a visual effect . keep on sinking soon enough skins to pay for putter . and i will buy your ping
