Question:

Do you use a rice cooker to make rice?

I have found this a miracle for my rice, it was horrid when I made it in a pan. Mushy and porridge-like, and I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to rice.

Have you heard of those rice cooker recipes, you can add other things to make a meal in itself - do you know any??

  1. I just use a pot.  As long as it is heavy and air tight, the rice comes out fine.  Rice cookers are easier, but I don't like kitchen appliances with only one use.

  2. I used to have a rice cooker but I rebel against gadgets nowadays.

I now put washed rice in a Pyrex bowl, add boiling water and cover with pierced cling film. Microwave on high for 1 minute to bring temperature back up, then 14 mins on low. Works perfectly every time you use the correct amount of water.

I usually use a colander for steaming, or just use little water in a pan with a tight lid and drop vegetables into that.

  3. Rice cooker is the only way I know how to make rice. Perfect rice everytime. Love my rice cooker use it everyday, especially if you have those that cost a bit more than the regular rice cooker you know ones that has a warm feature that it keeps it warm & fresh all day & does other things too.

  4. For small amounts, I just cook it on the stove. To feed an army, I use my steamer.

  5. No, I make it the old-fashioned way .. in a pot.

  6. Aren't rice cookers the best things? We eat rice several times a week and I can't believe what a difference having a RC makes - perfect rice every time, no mess etc.

I toss all sorts of thing in with it. Sometimes I use liquid chicken stock instead of water and toss in things like corn, capsicum, scallions, raisins, pine nuts, baby broccoli, bok choy, oyster sauce (not all at the same time). It takes a little trial and error to get the timing right - you should usually wait until you can see that the rice has started swelling. I haven't put any meat in with it - not sure how well that would work.

I use my steamer insert a lot. If you have one, wait until the last 8 minutes or so and put your vegetables in there. It cooks well and saves pots and mess.

  7. I cant make rice without it, using a rc gives you perfect rice all the time.

  8. i have used rice cookers in the past but i have them to be cumbersome.  i have perfected my rice in a pot. at times is will add vegetables to give the rice some variety.

  9. i absolutely love my rice cooker.

i havent tried anything else w/ it tho.

  10. We have a rice cooker but it's made out of aluminum and that can seep into the rice overtime. Aluminum can be a toxin so we use it minimally. It works well. But if you get one, try finding one that's not aluminum or any other toxic metal.

  11. you can cook a chicken in it, my wife put a raw chicken in it and hit the cook button. when the button jumped back up after it cooked the first time, you need to do it 2 more times for the chicken to cook completely

  12. yes, I use electrical rice cooker and almost every Chinese family (household) has one here in Hong Kong.  I sometimes fix chicken, dried scallops and shitake mushroom rice with the rice cooker.
