And if you do, is it possible to get caught? And if so, then what are the consequences?

no i do not use Limewire,it is full of viruses,i however used to use frostwire which is made by the same people as Limewire but it is a much better,safer program.

i no longer use either and when i did i only downloaded videos and not songs,i prefer to download my music from itunes etc

yes it is possible to get caught,some people have been traced and fined many thousands of dollars/pounds,other consequences are you may be banned from using the internet for a while (can happen in the UK) etc
