Question:

Do you use more gas traveling longer distance or longer time?

I am going on a short trip tomorrow. I have mapquested the route and find that one route takes me on the interstate and equals 190 miles one way. Another route takes me on the highways (mostly 4-lane highway) but is only 150 miles. Both are about the same driving time.

Which route will save me money in gas? Thanks!

  1. the longer distance will only be cheaper if there is a 7 mpg difference in mpg.. anything less and the shortest way is the cheapest..  the break even point is around 6 mpg difference.. that's at 30 and 24 respectively..

  2. I think the 190 one is best, as the other is probably a lot of stop and go.

But if the 150 route is not too many stops and you drive at 50 as opposed to 75 on the other, then the 150 would be better mileage.

Speed is very important is mileage, but so is stop and go.

  3. it doesnt matter how long you drive for, your car gets a certain amount of miles per gallon of gas in your car, the 190 mile route will cost you more than the 150 mile route, so go with the 150 mile route.

  4. As long as you don't encounter stop and go traffic, go with the 150mile route. It takes me the same amount of time to get to work with about 1 mile more distance but fewer stops. I am seriously getting about 70 miles more per tank. I couldn't believe it. Also, make sure your tires are inflated to the proper level and check your air filter and make sure it is clean. This will also save a few mpg.

  5. Your car will get better mileage cruising on the highway.  Basically the more starting and stopping you do the worse your gas mileage is. Thats why cars have two seperate MPG ratings for highway and city driving.
