when driving is it better to rev up to a higher speed and put the car in neutral and roll for a while or stay at a constant speed with smaller revs?

Oh and I know there are several variables but as an average what saves the most fuel?

  1. Constant speed with fewer revs.

Try to average about 2000rpm (varies with engine & gearbox).

Gentle acceleration, gentle braking in plenty of time. Think Newtons first law & you won't go far wrong.

  2. actaully, pulse and glide, which is what you are more or less describing, seems to save more gas.  but it's dangerous in traffic, illegal and hard on the mechanicals of the car.  overall, constant revs will save you money long term (fines, repairs, etc)
