Question:

Do you use the recommended amount of soap in the washing machine

I think the amounts they recommend on the containers are a little exaggerated, I use less than half what they say usually, and I think my clothes get nice and clean. Should I be doing this? What do you think?

  1. I also use a little less than they say. I think a good rinsing afterward is much better than extra soap. Too much soap left in the clothes actually make the clothes stiffer and attracts dirt easier.

  2. I was told by a repairman to always use what they say as the detergents contain water softeners and if you don't your machine will get hard water deposits (depends if you have hard water of course).  A friend of mine never uses the recommended amount and apart from her laundry being 'grey' she has to replace the heating element quite frequently (UK washers have heaters).

  3. No i always use less... if i dont the clothes sometimes dont get all the soap out and the clothes get stiff and itchy when we wear them.

  4. Same thing for me...I use the recommended amount only with very dirty clothing.  Otherwise, I use much less.

  5. I use more than they say I should because my clothes are soiled and I have a baby! Some of the loads are huge and I can't wash a full load on 1/4 cup detergent or less!

Whatever you like is fine. As long as you use soap and it seems to be a decent amount. To me, if it doesn't sud up the machine and get nice and bubbly, I don't think it's working.

  6. I have been using a lot less then recommended for years and have had no problems.  If there is a major amount of dirt, I would go for the full amount.

Too much soap left in the clothes can cause a lot a degrading too.  Rinsing is very important.

  7. As long as you are satisfied that they are clean enough for you, that's all you need..

Never use more than they recommend though, that can lead to oversudsing, and damage your washer... and make a mess....
