Question:

Do you use your local 'corner shop' or head straight to the bigger supermarkets?

Most seem to use the local shop for bits and bobs and do main shop at supermarket. Thing is, if we continue to shop this way one day we'll have to walk 3 mile or drive for the basics i:e bread milk because the local shops will go out of business.

  1. same as deadman and scanner

  2. local shop if we've run out of milk but for everything else the supermarket

  3. This all depends on what I need, what I am doing at the time, if it is a missing ingredient.

Our corner store is run by a local family who has just about everything you could need even in a pinch.  I utilize them for bread, drinks, etc when all I need is an item or two. Our shopping at the large markets are performed once or twice a week, and it is a lengthy trip. I try to only visit there once or twice a week as to the distance and time consumption it takes to travel there. Plus we keep a well stocked home so it is really easy to pick up the small items in a pinch at the corner store.  Our children and grandchildren love the 5 cent candy they have there also, so sometimes we walk the children there for a treat

  4. I always try to give my business to the local shopkeepers, I would rather help a local business stay viable than help make bonuses for faceless high flyers. However it is not a free lunch, they must meet comparable standards to the big stores. The shops I use I have found not only provide a far better service and range of choice than the big supermarkets but are also very competitively priced as well. I dont use the local shops for odds and ends, I buy my meat, fruit and vegetables and bread from them as well.

  5. i use the local shops for the basics like bread, milk, eggs and cereal, but i use the supermarket for my main food shopping.

  6. Same as deadman. Ditto.

  7. I used to use my corner shop regularly and loved it. Now I head straight for Asda, my local shop has been taken over, is overpriced and very dirty, so now I don't use it.

  8. ,I have no choice but to use supermarkets, we had 3 local shops all within a few minutes walk away and all 3 have closed down, the last one  to go was a Spar which was open very early til late, and even opened for a couple of hours on Christmas Day, i miss that one!!! Sign of the times???!!! EDIT>>> I will just add that all 3 shops had all been there for at least 40 years, 1 is now a house, 1 is a pizza takeaway, and the Spar has been empty for 6 years, the building is now in an appalling state !!!
