The free healthcare provided in Europe and Canada are a great model of what our healthcare can be here in the USA.

  1. Well first there is no such thing as free, especially in economics. So whether or not the U.S adopts "free" health care or not the public is still paying for it, it will just take on another name and form.

  2. Free healthcare is a socialist idea, if the US does adopt "Free" healthcare ideas then there will soon be more and more ideas creeping in in the same vein. In the UK the Socialist thinkers were the first to push the idea of free healthcare and got it in. Following this we have seen the adoption of "Cradle  to Grave" welfare and the system, like many other socialist idea is great......on PAPER!! The fact is that the concept just doesnt work, economically speaking there still needs to be funding from somewhere, ie, taxation. For america to adopt this system they would have to increase taxes phenomenally. This couldnt be done gradually eithe, for this system to take off it would have to be instantaneous!!

Another issue with "free" healthcare and the cradle to grave welfare policies is they are far too easily abused. Again referring to the UK, thousands of people are benefit cheats because it is easier to survive this way than to work hard for a living. And of course, its the honest folk who do pay their tax and do work hard that end up with the bill!

These ideas are not applicable to the modern world, 300 million citizens must all have access to this system if it is in place and previous comments are right, you cannot compare the US to europe. The UK population is only a fifth of the US population and the system is nothing but a major economic drain here, imagine UK problems multiplied by a factor of at least 5! Socialism died in the 80's and it's ideas should be laid to rest in the same grave!

  3. I already get free healthcare. I don't live in the richest country in the world. When I go to see the doctor I wait about 20 minutes to half an hour before I am seen. As for the healthcare itself I couldn't see how paying for it would make it any better. I paid for it in Australia and it was exactly the same as it is here in Britain for free. They examine you give you your prescription and away you go. Either way it's the same and I think that the privilege for living and paying tax in some of the richest countries in the world entitles you to have the country look after the health of it's population for free. I don't pay health tax for those that think I have to pay for it with a tax. Britain is not a socialist country.

  4. The problem with free healthcare is that it isn't free.  Plus we are a nation of 300 million people so comparing us to European countries isn't exactly a fair assessment.  Can you tell me a Government run program that is efficent and cost effective?  I can't think of a single one.  And you want these people in charge of your health?!?!?  Doesn't make sense to me...

You must trust the Federal Government a lot more than I do.

  5. sure... I also want free candy.

But Somebody inevitably pays for it, and I'm not a thief.

  6. Noone has proposed free healthcare for everyone.  So this isn't an issue.

  7. Haha we have free healthcare :P in the UK it's the best I love england! wooop

And we don't have extravagantly high taxes, they're just right, so there Americans!!! I have noticed actually that us brits seem to be creeping into your society a bit e.g. Sharon osbourne, simon cowell, leona lewis, nasty nigel (produces American Idol) etc.

  8. Yes, I do, and dental and vision care too.

  9. How naive can you be?  There's no such thing as FREE health care.  It's paid for with taxes, which means that the cost is spread across a greater number of people -- like insurance.  Of course then, you have to have a large federal bureaucracy to administer the program, and THAT'S not free, (or cheap) either.  So who does "free" heath care benefit?  People who don't pay taxes -- i.e., the unemployed who have to income with which to pay taxes.  It's basically another welfare program.  In the words of writer, PJ O'Rourke, "If you think health care is expensive NOW, wait til it's "FREE."

  10. Subsidized healthcare is better. I had both free healthcare and paid healthcare. Paid healthcare is much better quality. ( better doctors, less wait time, results ) Because of my income, I got reduced fees for the treatment. I'll always favor paid because that is your health and the free healthcare ( mediocre doctors, long wait, inconclusive results ) is not very good quality.

  11. Tell me, who is going to pay for 300 million! Americans health care, when it is, at the very least ,75 dollars for a basic office visit? Bypass surgery is about 100 grand, and they do about 10 thousand of them a day. Chemo treatments are about 600 dollars a vist, etc.

Do the math and you will understand how unrealistic that is.

  12. Healthcare in the UK is not free.  We pay for it with taxation.  And our tax increase to pay for it, is less than the money we save by not having to have the US system.

It is a shame that people in the USA do not realise that despite the US spending more money on healthcare PER PERSON than any other country in the world, they have higher death rates for kids aged under five than countries in western Europe with universal healthcare.  The poor in the US get great emergency care, and c**p preventative care.

Click the links if you want to see the figures.  Once you do that, tell me the healthcare system in the US works.

  13. Nothing in life is free.Tax payers will foot the bill.I have friends in England where there  is gov. ran health care, most of their pay goes to taxes and yes you can go to the dr. hope  you dont mind waiting 6 months to get in.

  14. Free would be nice... but unrealistic... at least for adults.

I would be satisfied with affordable healthcare.

  15. of course.. everyone desrves free health care

    excpept maybe the right wing...

  16. There is no such thing as free!  People will be taxed more.  What we want is affordable Health Care. The Democrats  only solution so far has been to propose dipping their greedy little fingers into our paychecks yet again.  I guess they want to Bankrupt Health Care as they have done Social Security.  If you want Health Care to be affordable, the best solution would be to outlaw Health Insurance.  Once medical practioners aren't guaranteed high fees they would have to reduce their prices and we would have affordable health care!

  17. Are you kidding,  Free Health Care?????  Someone is paying for it and it is called the taxpayers.  So, lets raise taxes and let an unaccountable agency manage Health Care that ought to work out really well.  Think about it.

  18. There is no such thing as FREE health care, my friend.

The Europeans and Canadians pay through the noses for it in taxes.

And, Canadians have extremely long waiting periods for things that you can get done quickly in the US.

As for Cuba having an "excellent" health care system .... don't get me started.   You need to stop being so gullible.

    .

  19. yes I do, otherwise I don't go to the Dr's

  20. It's true that other countries have nice models of free healthcare. But in other countries, people tend to be more willing to give up privileges and advantages for the greater good. Not so in the U.S of A. Free healthcare is great for the poor, who have nothing to lose with the deal. But if you are a middleclass citizen happy with your coverage, you will be royally screwed if free health care becomes a reality. Why?

    1) Say you been with your physician for a long time. A free healthcare program will assign you a new doctor they deem fit for you.

    2) Looooong lines- everyone will be at the doctor's office everytime they cough because HEY it's free.

    3) TAXES TAXES TAXES!- in economics, there's no such thing as a free lunch. the cost of "free" healthcare will disguise itself in taxes.

free healthcare sounds good on paper, but if it's made a reality, we will see the implications it's gonna have on the average joe.
