I Can’t Go Home

Downtown

Canal Street

Backbeat to the rhythm

And blues

Tell you where you got them shoes

On your feet man

Bourbon Street man

Take a seat man

For the greatest show on Earth

Parading to the sounds of

Gunshots ringing

Out of time

Second in line

For last place

Try to face

The music that plays

In my head

Dirge for the dead

I quit trying

Satchmo’s soul crying

400 dying for years

As tears flood the city

That’s rotten

From the Corps

Forgotten once more

To care

  1. I have friends who have left there

    And one who's returned

    They all were bereft there

    As the cruel waters churned.

I have been there but once

    In joy, pre-catastrophe

    And feel what you've suffered

    From that great tragedy.

    Bless you all.

  2. Have not been there in years...

Believe if I went, I'd be flooded

    in tears.

  3. I found your poem really moving. Yes, I want to go back to the Big Easy. I've only been there once, and in fact it was my first time in the US. I absolutely adored it. People were extremely friendly (especially when they knew you were French...) and the food was simply delicious. For me, it was at once total exoticism, and the sort of place where you immediately feel at home.

  4. I'm almost afraid to go back, but I know I'll have to someday...

  5. Many moons have passed by since my last visit... I remember a funeral,, jazz sounds blown by melodic breezes, people celebrating life... and death... cajuns speaking a language I understood but could not duplicate, poetry flowing naturally with every word they spoke... s*x was erotic, not pornographic... and Kathleen, my lover, who drove down from Alexandria... no reason to go back, she's no longer there.

  6. The downfall of Nawlins was that no one 'believed' in that storm. Lived there for ten years in the 70's...only heard laughter....

Your bitterness is quite complete here...amazing poem of disclosure...and yet, you bring the city's heart here for us to see...amazing!
