  1. So let's get down to the reality of surfing right away.Surfing is an ocean sport. before you decide to surf, decide to know and understand the ocean. Learn to be at home with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes BIG waves. The original surfers were watermen (and women, both men and women surfed, but certain waves were reserved for royalty). I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave.

That having been said, YES, I it fun. It is great fun and very challenging. I have been surfing since 1966, and I have enjoyed every bit of it.

It can be fairly "scary" because of big waves, but that is the thrill of it, and that is why those of us who spend most of our lives surfing on small waves yearn for the big stuff. If it wasn't thrilling and exhilarating, we probably wouldn't want to do it.

Obviously you are a sand crab. Folks who know the ocean (and it's inhabitants) don't worry about sharks. Hundreds of more farmers get struck by lightning every year than people get bitten by sharks. Oh they are out there, and I, for one, have learned to use common sense practices to avoid being on their dinner menu, but it's not something that we generally worry about. Do you worry about getting struck by "clear air" lightning?

Well if you ever want to try, make sure you start out by learning how to be at home in the ocean. Then take surf lessons, it really makes a diference.

  2. i never worry about sharks when i surf. i know they wont even get near me or any other surfer in the line up and if they do then they are not likely to attack so i never worry about them. but do know what to do if youre the unlucky person who had that 0.00000000000009 chance of getting attacked. punch them in the nose and stab your fingers in their eyes.

i dont worry about rip currents because i ride them all the time. i know how to get out of them too. sometimes i ride them out to the line up. this is not recommended though. only experienced surfers should do that. i have been riding the rips for 4 years so i know about them.

over all, surfing is a great sport. it is so much fun. it feels like you are flying over the water. i have enjoyed every wave that i have surfed over the last 6 years.

  3. Surfing is extremely fun and great exercise.  As for worrying about sharks, I don't.  The beaches in So. Cal. don't have a high shark bite probability and my chances of being eaten by one are extremely low.  Even if one was to bite me I would most likely be injured as sharks feed on blubber like that of seals... we don't really taste so great to them.  Unfortunately for us sharks have poor vision and bite first, taste later.  But like I said shark bites here and really around the world are very uncommon though some spots are more populous than others.  I have spent thousands of hours surfing in Huntington, San Clemente, Dana Point... all over the Coast as well as Florida and I have never been bitten or stung by anything... knock on wood.  If anything, you have a greater chance of stepping on a sand shark or getting stung by a jellyfish but even those odds are slim.  So go ahead learn to surf and enjoy yourself... stop worrying, life's to short!

  4. i live in south australia and the water is very cold here so we tend to get the great white shark when they come around.

ive been surfing for 8 years and in those 8 years 3 people have been killed by the great white shark and 2 have been attacked by a bronze wailer.

and this has been in the streach of about 120km of beach line.

so in saying that i only get a little worried when i am surfing by myself and there isnt anyone around me.

but i normally go out with mates or just go and surf with someone near me.

i know that you are very unlucky to be eatin by a shark but around here it does happen.
