Do your kids get ice cream in school every day?

My son just started kindergarten this year and it bothers me a little that the kids can buy ice cream everyday. (yet gym class is only twice per wk) I know I don't have to let my son buy it every day but most of the kids do and he feels left out when he doesn't get it. He is thin and healthy but I feel this is a bad habit.

  1. Tell him he can get on gym days. That is exactly what I would do. Thankfully, we don't have this at our kids school. My kids are pretty active and they get a snack after school anyhow. I wouldn't want them to eat ice cream daily at school. Gym days or Fridays. He won't suffer. you would be surprised at how he won't even care if you set it up like that. tell him which days ahead of time that he gets it and he'll be fine with it.

  2. I totally understand! I think it's a bad habit to start eating ice cream everyday. I let mine buy it only twice per wk. They want it every day but they are just going to have to learn they can't always get and do what everyone else is doing.

  3. My daughter is in first grade, and at her school the kids don't have a ton of lunchtime options. They can either get hot lunch, which comes with the main dish, a small side, a fruit or vegetable of some sort, and a small treat like a cookie or jello or an ice cream bar every once in awhile. That's what my daughter gets most of the time, and I'm fine with that, it's a pretty well-balanced meal. Otherwise the kids can buy a salad from the school or they can bring a lunch from home.

If my daughter's school did offer those kinds of choices though, I think I would have to set some limits. I'd say that ice cream is okay once a week, and I'd inform my daughter that she could buy an ice cream once a week and once a week only, regardless of what her friends do. Most schools nowadays offer an online system where you can monitor your kid's lunch account and what is purchased. If my daughter continued to buy ice cream everyday, I'd be forced to pull the plug on her lunch account and she'd have to bring a bag lunch to school everyday for a period of time.

  4. I think that you should put your child on a limit. You're going to spoil him if you let him get what he wants because he wants to fit in.

When he gets older, are you going to blow your retirement fund on him to get him a nice sports car because all his friends are getting one and he doesn't want to feel left out?

You're killing two birds with one stone!

  5. I dont even think my sons school has ice cream. I know they try to keep their lunch menus healthy and balanced.

  6. Well, I'm not in kindergarten anymore so I have to say this from my level and I'm not a mom either but our school sells treats everyday. My mom doesn't give us any money for it so we take it out of our allowence. We are responsible how much we want because of course we want to spend our money on other things. With your son, I would let him buy it twice a week, but on those days he has to do something nice for someone. So make it a give and take. In other words, he "earns" it.

  7. nope they sell it every day but i only let them get it on friday

  8. My daughter went to a Catholic School for Pre-K and Kindergarten and they didn't offer very much as far as snacks. But this year she will be in 1st grade. I will have her lunch pre-paid, so that she doesn't have to worry about losing her money. But at least once a week, maybe twice, I will give her a little money to buy a treat. There are also special days when we feel that she earns a special treat and she will be given money to buy something at school.
