Question:

Do zoologists protect animals?

I am thinking of going into Zoology as a major, but I am not entirely sure what they do. I know they observe animals, collect data, present their data, and stuff like that. What do they do regarding animal rights? Like, zoologists discover cures for animal diseases and find ways to make their lives better? Or is that only for the people in PETA and other groups?

  1. Animal "rights" are a matter for activists, not for scientists. Cures for animal diseases are mostly the province of research veterinarians, most of whom majored in zoology as undergraduates.

If all you want to do is protect the cute furry animals, you don't have what it takes to become a zoologist. On the other hand, if you want to learn everything you can about animals (or just a group of animals), you can often make things better for those animals. For example, I do environmental impact studies and like to think that I can get building projects modified so as to protect the greatest number of animals (especially imperilled species).

  2. Zoologists are awesome. Zoos are zoological centers operated by zoologists, but of course that's not all they do. Richard Dawkins, Steve Irwin, David Attenborough, Edward Wilson, Jane Goodall, and Jeff Corwin are all zoologists, I believe.

I can't give a list of all the things you could do as a zoologist, but I can definitely say that you wouldn't be confined to any one little thing. It's very diverse and awesome. That's what I want to be.

  3. people in "animal rights" groups do not do anything to help save animals.

zoologists, or any other animal scientist for that matter, believe in and uphold animal WELFARE; they ensure animals under their care have proper shelter, food, and are looked after.
