Doan leads Phoenix Coyotes past Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2
Shane Doan lit the lamp in extra session to lift Phoenix Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.
Taylor Pyatt and Eric Belanger each also tallied a goal for Coyotes, who have extended their win streak to eight contests. Ilya Bryzgalov was solid between the pipes, making 37 saves for the victors.
Ville Leino and Claude Giroux both found the net for Philadelphia, which had won six of eight coming into the play-off. Sergei Bobrovsky turned away 26 shots in the loss.
"They have a good team and are really fast," said Flyers forward Mike Richards. "I thought the pace of play was good tonight. We played well; we had a lot of chances. They were very opportunistic and they got the last shot."
Philadelphia got on the board first for 1-0 lead just 6 ½ minutes into the opening stanza. The goal came when Matt Carle ripped a wrist shot from the left point and Leino deflected it home.
Bobrovsky secured the lead through the first two periods, as he turned aside all 16 shots he faced.
However, Coyotes pulled an equalizer, 1-1, at 2:44 mark of the final period. It happened so when Mikkel Boedker defeated a defender in the Flyers end and took a position behind the right side of the net. After waiting for a moment, he chipped
the disk to the front, where Belanger jammed it into the cage.
Just after the halfway point of the same period, Coyotes went ahead by 2-1 lead when Pyatt whizzed a rolling puck from the top of the left circle past Bobrovsky.
Bobrovsky was benched for an extra attacker and Flyers notched a goal to knot the game at 2-2 with nearly one minute left in the third period. The play was set up by Jeff Carter, who sent the puck from the slot to the low left side where Giroux
hit a rebound off his own shot past goalie.
Doan netted the game-winning goal at 2:44 mark of the extra session when Kimmo Timonen was whistled for hooking.
Coyotes got a man advantage into the Flyers end and Philadelphia was further shorthanded when a defenseman lost his stick. Radim Vrbata swept a pass from the right circle to the left where Doan banged a one-timer into the net to seal the win
at 3-2.
"Yeah, I mean we obviously took advantage of a couple bounces too. It was a big two points for us. Anytime we come to this building, you know it going to be a tough game and we found a way." said Doan.
