  1. Both breeds can be dominant and may "challenge" kids. Properly trained and socialized and they can both be excellent.

The doberman will need less grooming, but will shed those small hairs year round. the schnauzer will need to be taken to the groomer and clipped every 6-8 weeks but you won't notice a lot of shedding.

  2. as far as teh greyhound answer i am shocked hello off teh track too..DUH PREY DRIVE it will nip and chase the children jees...some people well my answer is eaither as long as you have time for training WITH the kids and the dog growing up both are beautiful loving dominant breeds that will be great with your kids just find the right breeder who will match you with the right pup...take your time and make a choice..i prefer the GS because there not over bred or as sensitive as the dobie as the dobie is more of a clingie sufferer of seperation anxiety kinda breed..the GS just walks with a confident thats unmatchable and they can be quite the clown behind doors " never showing there goofy personality to strangers" guarding instint is strong and they are BRAVE boy, i groom three one who is my fav named tony ah hes a big beauty...i researched the doberman prior to buying a rotteriler i found the rittie better suited me....so research both breeds...

  3. I haven't had any problems with my giant schnauzer.

  4. I have a schnauzer, he has been raised with my children he is now 11 years old and he is still very protective of our children. No one can mess with them they are his kids. He loves all kids and will get very protective if he feels someone is hurting one of them.

We have had him since he was 5 weeks old his mother was killed by a car when she escaped from her yard.

as far as grooming, schnauzers don't shed, you have to  take them to the groomer every few weeks.

  5. Neither: If you want a dog that is good with kids yet big enough and protective enough to be a good watch dog get yourself a Border Collie:

Of all the dogs I've ever handled or been around they are the best with kids.  They are also good watch dogs.

They might shed a little but that is minor when counting the benefits.

If you have just one kid a chow will work. Only trouble with a chow you start correct the kid you are going to have to deal with the chow. They are strictly a one person dog.

  6. I had a Giant Schnauzer years ago, and in retrospect, would never have one with kids.  Dobermans can be very gentle, loving dogs, but also quite formidable as well.  Be careful in either case.

If you are looking for a large-framed dog that is sweet, you may want to consider rescuing a Greyhound off the track.  They are extremely gentle, not aggressive in any way, expert couch potatoes, and comical.  You would be saving the life of a beautiful dog, and getting in return a fabulous pet.  They are usually retired at three years old, and live until about 15... not a bad deal, when you look at the alternatives.

  7. well i know that miniature schnauzers are good with kids (but can be rough) i gues. but i think get the giant, its less rough den a doberman, it is also good if your family members are allerigic, as they shed from none to little, while doberman shed more. :D

  8. As far as shedding, the Schnauzer will not shed. Both of these dogs are not for inexperienced dog owners and are quite dominant.Once trained, both are great dogs and should be fine with your kids, under supervision,of course.

As far as a guard type dog with kids, you cannot beat a Boxer. They are wonderful with kids and are big jokers. The only downside is that Boxers are prone to cancer and don't always live that long.
