Docherty appointed chief executive of Edinburgh
Edinburgh's pre-season activity continues as the club have named Craig Docherty as their new chief executive ahead of the new Magners League season.
Docherty will take on the role full-time from the start of the season and has already been in the position on a temporary basis for the last two months. It seems he has had a positive effect as the club have now offered him the full job.
He commented: "I'm incredibly proud and very excited to be given this opportunity. The club have been on an upward curve both on and off the field in the last few years, and I feel I'm well placed to develop and improve upon that trend. I know how Edinburgh works in a commercial and a rugby sense, and I'll be tapping into that knowledge and those contacts to make sure we move forward as one."
Edinburgh are a club that should be competing in all forms of rugby every single season. Hopefully this appointment will allow the club to stay sound and secure while the players on the pitch can move forward and focus on winning games.
There are many positives to appointing Docherty to this position. He should have a very beneficial impact on the club and if the team can be successful then it will make his job much easier.
The right appointment
Docherty is the right appointment for many reasons. He already has experience of running the club as the chief executive. He has done this job for the last two months and this would normally be considered as the settling in period.
During this time he would have worked out all of the immediate issues and problems that are likely to face the club this coming season. This automatically puts the club in a better position to cope because Docherty will have already formulated one or two plans of action.
In Docherty they have a man who has openly said that he loves the club. They have not appointed someone who will simply view the position as a job and nothing more. It will ensure that the chief executive will never put the future of the club at risk.
Success on the pitch
Edinburgh as a club cannot rely on the people in the important roles to carry the club from day to day. The only way everything can become sustainable is if the club are winning matches out on the rugby field.
This will make things such as sponsorship and commercial productivity of the club a foregone conclusion. It will allow Docherty's life to be a lot easier and in turn he can give something back to the running of the club.
Scottish rugby chief executive Gordon McKie added: "He is well known and well respected in the city's rugby and business spheres, which leaves him perfectly placed to hit the ground running and ensure real progress is made in the club's efforts to keep engaging the people of Edinburgh and giving them a team to be proud of."
Betting advice
Every successful team needs to have a solid group of people running the club behind the scenes. Edinburgh have managed to get the right people in control of the club and it will allow them to go for it this season.
Although the pre-season results have not been fantastic, Edinburgh will up their game for any league matches. Take a punt on the side during their first few games and back them to win the Magners League title this year if you can get good odds. However, always be cautious and only use small amounts.
