When does the doctor start checking to see if you are dialating how many weeks?

  1. If you're pregnant, the obstetrician will check your cervix at every visit, to make sure things are progressing normally even apart from dilation.

    Some dilation of the cervix can occur in late pregnancy even before labor begins--up to 3 centimeters is what we were taught, and if it's more than 3 centimeters labor has started.  Pregnancy is considered term starting at 37 weeks, but that doesn't mean they won't check before then--they will.

  2. I didn't usually get checked until about 37-38 weeks with my pregnancies.  I don't know what they do these days, but I imagine it isn't much different.

    If you're contracting, they'll check at any gestational age, to see if the contractions are causing changes in the cervix.  Otherwise, there's no reason to until you're term (about 38 weeks).
