I am going to be a junior in high school, and I really have my mind set on being a phsyician assistant. I love going to the doctor, since I was a little kid, I liked watching them do theyre job, and all that.

I think its so interesting. It sounds weird but I think just asking people questions about how they feel and examining a throat sounds awesome! Lol. Only thing is I can't take gory sites. And Im terrible at math..

Should I still try?

I really want to be doctor.

The only reason I would be a asst. and not a real doctor is because Im not good at math.. and gory sites lol.

  1. Yes... You would make a great doctor.

  2. A physicians assistant is still a 6-year program (masters degree) which will involve biology, chemistry, probably physics, and yes, math.  If you want to avoid math as much as possible and still go into medicine, try nursing.

  3. Okay, I'm gonna be a senior in high school soon, and I used to dream of becoming a doctor.

Then, I read this book that really made me reconsider what I wanted to do.

You should read the book "White Coat" by Ellen Lerner Rothman

It gives u a very good idea of what medical school's gonna be like

Decide whether or not you'll be able to handle the pressure then

You will have to learn all aspects of the medical profession, not just what u want to specialize in, including surgery, gynecology etc. etc.

You'll have to get used to replacing naps with sleeping, and you'll have to suffer from constant sleep deprivation

You'll have to become used to doing rectal exams, testicular exams, and all that icky stuff and you'll have to deal with a huge amount of grief and the burden of responsibility as you watch your patients die

And remember, it doesn't end after you finish ur undergraduate years and medical school

You still have to be an intern, a resident, a permanent resident etc etc

It's like a hierarchy you have to climb up before u finally become a doctor

I decided I won't have the emotional nor the mental capacity to handle the process of becoming a doctor.

    I highly recommend this book.

Also, try finding other areas you're passionate about

Even if you decide to enter medical school, many people decide to drop out later on for various reasons

    Have a backup plan
