Doctors or medical interns / students answer please?

Is this job rewarding ? I have wanted to do this job my whole life , since the age of 7. I live for that feeling you get that you have changed or helped or saved somebodys life even if you are giving up your life. I can really live on self-sacrifice . Working all nighters , running throught the hospital , getting yelled at , all of that I can handle as long as I get that feeling at the end of the week when I lay down that I am making a diference in someones life. As I get older , it dons't bother me the sacrafice of work that goes into becoming a doctor but I hear so many cases of paople who dislike this proffesion? Any words of wisdom ? Is this truley a noble job? What area of medicine and what type of enviroment would fit a strong-headed, driven, caring, determined, mulitasker who can work well in chaos? I am also very good with people and solving thier mental situtions and I would love pschy. but I would yearn for a chaotic enviroment.

  1. please please please dont do psych.

what you described is basically a healthy attitude to approaching medicine.

im a medical student and it only gets better from when you start.  when you get to clinical placements. theres always something new to do and every case is different. medicine has no monotony at all. unfortunately, after a psych rotation, i cant say the same thing. they are all alcoholic depressive or something along those lines, and in my opinion you will get disconnected quite easily and see it as only a job. you want to save someones life? do emergency medicine, become a surgeon, become a cardiac specialist. i gurantee it will take a few years of study before you decide exactly what you want to do.

as for nobility, no. prepare to get utterly sh*t upon. most people see medical service as just that- a service. they wont thank you for doing your job, and many will have their own ideas about treatment and refuse to accept your opinion. but thats life. if you manage to look past that and can really say that they wouldve died without your help, congratulations, you will have the satisfaction.

unfortunately, many people decide medicine is not for them, and only realise after a few years into medical school.

and, doctors only have friends who are doctors, and only see their friends at work, and only ever talk about medical stuff, so prepare yourself.

  2. The reason why doctorsd hate the job is that there is not much family time and a lot of stress in the work place.

For a person like you, be a psychiatrist.....it is similiar in the medical field and you got the personality and the attitude to be one.

My advice take the job I mentioned because you can solve people's problem and it is highly in demand and easy to set your own private workplace. This field is great since you got the mental raw materials for the job and meeting new people are cool

    hope this helps^_^
