Document feeder error message

We are on a small Pacific island with no Toshiba service within 1500 miles. Our e-Studio 280 displays a "Misfeed in document feeder" error message at turn on.There are no documents in the feeder. The document feeder is part number MR-3016. Perhaps a problem with a photo detector?
